Dangaronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka says that he may return to the series at some point. The man behind the murder-mystery series is currently at work on Master Detective Archives: Rain Code, a dark fantasy game set in a city of unending rain. The title had been revealed last month and is set to release for the Nintendo Switch in Spring 2023.

The first game in the Danganronpa series, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, was first released by on the PS Vita in 2010. It was followed by two sequels, an anime, and a few spin-offs. The plot of each mainline title sees a number of high school students becoming trapped, with the only way out being to murder a classmate and get away with it. When someone is murdered, the surviving students hold a trial. If the murderer is found, the survivors continue their lives while the guilty party is executed, though if they are wrong, the killer goes free. Every student has a special skill or ability and are considered the best in that field. The series has gained a following over the years and has been released on a number of platforms since its initial debut.

However, Kodaka did mention that he may go back someday. He admitted that Danganronpa is a niche series, and now he is able work on a bigger one, but that it would be cool to go back to the franchise at some point. Kodaka said he is not into doing the same things as others and that he would rather not choose the safe option. He states that when people begin forgetting about Danganronpa, he will feel more inclined to return to the series.

The last mainline title in Kodaka's murder-mystery series was Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. While the game did introduce a few new features such as Mass Panic Debates, Killing Harmony continued the tradition of sad deaths. The title has players control Kaede Akamastu, who is known to be the "Ultimate Pianist." While the devious Monokuma continues to be the main villain of Killing Harmony, the game does introduce the Monokubs, the antagonist's self-proclaimed children.

Danganronpa Decadence, a collection containing Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, and Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp, is available for the Nintendo Switch.
