Until today, CD Projekt Red has refrained from confirming that a next-generation version of Cyberpunk 2077 was in development. However, it's now been confirmed that the long-awaited RPG will in fact be coming to Microsoft's next-generation Xbox Series X console, though there's so far been no word on a PS5 version of Cyberpunk 2077.

The official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account made the announcement, confirming that those who pick up the Xbox One version of the game will get a free upgrade to the Xbox Series X version. It made this announcement while responding to a tweet about the Xbox Series X backward compatibility features. However, it did not confirm that Cyberpunk 2077 will be on Xbox Series X at launch, noting that Xbox One owners will get their free upgrade "when available."

While there's no mention of a possible Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 port in the tweet, one has to imagine that a PS5 version of the game is indeed in the works. It would be out of character for CD Projekt Red to exclude a huge chunk of its audience, as the company has a reputation of being one of the most gamer-friendly on the planet. But while a PS5 version of Cyberpunk 2077 is all but guaranteed, it's unclear if it will enjoy the same free upgrade as the Xbox One version.

In any case, this announcement could make Xbox One users who were going to wait for a next-generation version of Cyberpunk 2077 take the plunge early. This way, they will still be able to play Cyberpunk 2077 on its release date but will still be able to check out the next-gen version of the game when it becomes available.

The confirmation of Cyberpunk 2077 for Xbox Series X shows that CD Projekt Red is trying to bring the game to as many platforms as possible. Cyberpunk 2077 is already confirmed for Google Stadia, and it will also be available on GeForce Now on launch day. CD Projekt Red hasn't even ruled out a Cyberpunk 2077 Switch port, though if that ever happens, it seems like it will come some time later, like we saw with The Witcher 3.

Whether or not a Cyberpunk 2077 Switch port ever materializes remains to be seen, but it's not like fans will be hurting for ways to play the game. In the meantime, here's hoping that the likely Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 version is announced soon as well.

Cyberpunk 2077 is launching on September 17 for GeForce Now, PC, PS4, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
