Earlier this week, developer CD Projekt RED surprised many by revealing the first Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay demo. Although the footage had previously been shown to members of the press in a behind closed doors meeting, the stream offered the first chance for fans to see the game in action. It offered 48 minutes of gameplay footage, including character creation, city exploration, and more.

Fans responded positively to the stream, so positively, in fact, that the game managed to set a new record. The Cyberpunk 2077 stream managed to draw in peak viewership of 288,000 viewers during the livestream itself. According to GitHyp, this figure skyrockets to 459,000 concurrent viewers when taking into account restreams.

This figure didn't just make the upcoming RPG the most watched game on Twitch that day, beating out streaming juggernaut Fortnite and its 305,000 views. But it is also the most viewed stream for any newly released or upcoming game so far this year. Comparatively, PS4 exclusive God of War received 283,000, sea-faring pirate adventure Sea of Thieves got 259,000, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 got 204,000.

Some may not be especially surprised that the gameplay reveal stream has proved such a hit. After all, the Cyberpunk 2077 E3 2018 trailer was only fans' second proper taste of the game after the initial reveal trailer shared five years previously. As such, fans were always going to welcome new footage of the game with open arms.

This is evident not just in the stream views but in the 5.3 million views that the footage has on the official Cyberpunk 2077 YouTube channel, as well. And that's not including the uploads from third-party YouTube channels.

Many fans will also be hoping that CD Projekt RED will leverage this support for the game and will share even more. The developer recently revealed that the game is playable from start to finish, for example, but fans don't yet know when the game will be released. CD Projekt RED must surely understand that fans are eager for information about the game's release plans so maybe the view counts will give the developer an incentive to share that.

Until then, fans will have to pore over interviews and that gameplay footage video for additional tidbits about the game, such as info about fail states and class systems. Fingers crossed the developer will share even more about its hotly anticipated game very, very soon.

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently without an official release date but is expected to launch for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
