Those who have been waiting for word on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 may be interested to know that the follow-up, code-named Project Orion, is likely to enter development in 2024. While CD Projekt Red's dystopian RPG has gone down as one of the most infamous launches in recent gaming history, it is now considered to be one of the better open-world games for current gen, especially after a series of major patches.

Fans are now looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty DLC, which is due out soon. It seems that the initial launch of the game back in 2020 is fast becoming a distant memory for some. On top of the new content, the studio is also set to begin working on a follow-up, though not much is known about this project currently.

As spotted by TweakTown, in a recent earnings call, CDPR has said that the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 will enter the early stages of development in 2024, specifically mentioning that the team already has "some expenses related to Project Orion, as well as for Project Hader," the codename for a new standalone IP. The report from TweakTown goes on to say that this initial stage, particularly in relation to research and development, represents the "early phase." So it's likely going to be a long time before the next Cyberpunk game comes out. In any case, it sounds like CD Projekt Red is eager to see 2023 out with what will hopefully be a successful launch of Phantom Liberty before it makes headway on any additional games. The topic begins around the 20-minute mark.

The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel was announced in October 2022, though there's very little known about the project. Considering the sci-fi RPG had such a negative response when it released just before Christmas 2020, owing to major game-breaking glitches, the tide has definitely shifted for the game and its developer. Things are in a much better state two and half years later, and hopefully CDPR won't encounter such problems with the launch of the follow-up.

In general, CD Projekt Red is going to be busy these next few years. Along with the new Cyberpunk installment, the team is also working on a new Witcher saga and an official remake of the first Witcher game. For fans of the developer, there's certainly a lot to look forward to, but it's understandable that some may be a little hesitant after these past couple of years.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
