It has been something of a PR nightmare for CD Projekt Red over the past several months. With a controversial and shaky release of the much-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077, saying the game is broken, particularly on console, has become almost a joke among the community. The joke has even spread across the internet, with Reddit users poking fun at CD Projekt Red's shortcomings by mocking the company's "In Numbers" campaign. Despite all that, the game has sold incredibly well and was even the biggest selling game on the PS4 last month.

Despite not being available on the PlayStation Store for around six months, Cyberpunk 2077 has done enormously well on the PS4. In the PlayStation Store chart, the game beat out the likes of many fan favorites, including GTA 5 in the US and Canada, and FIFA 21 in Europe. The reason for this could be down to the sheer number of PlayStation owners who went ahead and purchased the game as soon as it became available again.

Even when the game did come back onto the store, Sony warned people about purchasing the base PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077. The game was removed almost immediately after being released in December 2020, citing the serious bugs that plagued the game, rendering it almost unplayable for many. Sony also went one further by offering full refunds to everyone who purchased the game. Ordinarily, digital downloads are only eligible for a refund if the game has not been played by the user. However, in this instance, all refunds were honored, even for players who had already completed the game.

As of late June, CD Projekt Red's joint-CEO, Adam Kiciński, has said he is "satisfied" with how Cyberpunk 2077 is in its current state, adding that he is "quite happy" after the new patch. Despite his words, it's still worth baring in mind that since returning to storefront on June 21, Sony recommends players opt for the PS4 Pro or PS5 versions of the game rather than the base PS4 version, which the company feels will yield the best playing experience.

However, the fact that it's become the best-selling PS4 game of June is a testament to how much people are still willing to play it. With patches for the Cyberpunk 2077 coming out on a regular basis, there's bound to be a time when it will finally be in the state it was supposed to be in upon release. It's just a bit of a shame that it's taken this long to get here, with CDPR's reputation being sullied along the way.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions currently in development.
