Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED confirms that the game's multiplayer content isn't yet in development and will not be available at launch. Rumors had suggested that the game's online multiplayer would allow players to get together and hang out in the many bars and clubs of Night City.

Speaking to Eurogamer,Cyberpunk 2077's lead quest designer Paweł Sasko revealed that the development team isn't really working on the game's multiplayer now and that the "sole focus is single-player." If something does happen with the game's multiplayer content, it will "definitely be post-launch." Sasko also confirmed that there had been "some discussions" about making Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer like Grand Theft Auto Online but any multiplayer content that is added to the game will be made in the developer's "style."

Many Cyberpunk 2077 fans will be unsurprised by Sasko's response. From the 48 minute gameplay video it showed last year, to the E3 2019 trailer, CD Projekt RED has only allowed the public to see the game's single player. If multiplayer was being worked on and if CD Projekt RED had something to show, then it probably would have shown some gameplay or shared much more information.

Other fans, though, will be sad to see that Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer content could be a long way away. Many are excited to see more from the game's story, meeting characters such as Keanu Reeves' Johnny Silverhand, but the multiplayer could be good fun too. Leaks said that the game's online multiplayer would offer mini-games and other activities for players to do outside of the main game.

Sasko doesn't say when this multiplayer content may become available. The game's E3 2018 trailer confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 would have free DLC. It didn't say how much of this free DLC may be released, or when. However, if CD Projekt RED is also planning to release single player content after launch, that could delay the release of any online multiplayer modes.

The release of the game's multiplayer content may take CD Projekt RED some time, but the developer has stated its commitment to online content with the game. The developer has called online content "necessary" for the game to be a huge success. CD Projekt RED has also said that Cyberpunk 2077 won't have microtransactions, and it won't be greedy which is a criticism often heard about other online multiplayer games.

Cyberpunk 2077 will release on April 16th, 2020 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
