Cyberpunk 2077 was revealed way back in 2012, with it also being revealed in 2013 that the game would have a multiplayer component. Nothing was ever really shared about this, but many had high hopes that Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer was effectively GTA Online but set in Night City. Of course, as fans know, the game that was promised then isn’t what was delivered in 2020.

About a year before Cyberpunk 2077 launched, it was confirmed that the multiplayer wasn’t yet in development and would come after the base game released. However, when that time came, CD Projekt Red got hard to work fixing several performance and technical issues. As such, timetables got seriously pushed around, and in March 2021, CD Projekt Red stated that Cyberpunk 2077 standalone multiplayer was being “reconsidered.”

CD Projekt Red’s words on the matter confused many, including investors, as this came at the same time that it said all its franchises and releases would get online components. But the short of it was that, at best, it was indefinitely delayed. Now, a new rumor courtesy of Valve Network’s Tyler McVicker claims that the multiplayer is back in production.

According to McVicker, the Cyberpunk 2077 1.3 update was a big one for dataminers, as the patch essentially reworked several components of the Red Engine in files. This means that it’ll take dataminers longer for some finds, but that mentions of a Cyberpunk 2077 “multi” in files had changed. Said change indicates that multiplayer mode is back in the works, as well another file indicating that the game would be getting a second major DLC after the first.

With these being initial finds, it seems that the 1.3 update for Cyberpunk 2077 could hold even more secrets about the game’s future content. Just as with any rumor or leak, however, fans should be sure to take this with a major grain of salt. CD Projekt Red hasn’t commented on this and isn’t likely to, but as far as timing goes, it adds up.

CD Projekt Red recently deemed Cyberpunk 2077’s performance as “satisfactory.” This doesn’t mean that the developer hasn’t given up on patching the game, but that it might split up teams to work on various other elements related to the IP. The premium expansions for Cyberpunk 2077 would likely be in the works right now, if they are going to release over the next year or so, and it does make sense that the multiplayer component would be back in the works. However, again, fans should exercise caution.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
