A Cyberpunk 2077 movie is now a "possibility" because of Keanu Reeves' role in the game, reveals Cyberpunk series creator. Reeves will be playing the popular rockstar Johnny Silverhand in the game, and he has the second most dialogue of any Cyberpunk 2077 character, following just behind the player character.

Speaking to Video Games Chronicle, Cyberpunk series creator Mike Pondsmith said that while he can't talk about Cyberpunk 2077 movie rights, "with Keanu Reeves being tied up in things, it’s become much more of a possibility." Pondsmith said that Cyberpunk 2077 could be a good movie because it would hit the "sweet spot" between movies that make people think, such as Blade Runner, and those that provide viewers with action.

Making a video game is much different from making a board game, and Pondsmith has had to adapt to the medium. If a Cyberpunk 2077 movie is made, changes will be made again, and Pondsmith said that what he expects to see "will be different."

Pondsmith may have also teased that Reeves isn't the only Hollywood name that will star in Cyberpunk 2077. Asked if any other actors could be in the game, the board game creator said "no comment." There had been rumors that popstar and A Star is Born actor Lady Gaga would be in Cyberpunk 2077, though the game's developer, CD Projekt RED, has yet to confirm this. Kanye West, who has created short films and has a huge music career, is another famous name rumored to be a part of the sci-fi RPG.

Movies about video games haven't always fared so well. Jake Gyllenhaal's turn as the Prince of Persia in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was criticized for its quality and for whitewashing the lead role. The first Super Mario Bros. movie, Street Fighter The Legend of Chun Li, and Hitman: Agent 47 are a few other video game movies that were also received negatively.

There are some bright sparks though, and Pondsmith will hope that if a Cyberpunk movie is made, it will be received like Detective Pikachu. The live-action movie was a box office smash, and critics and fans seemed to love it. The Resident Evil movies also haven't received as much criticism as other video game movies. If the Cyberpunk creator is ready to make changes for the movie medium, while still giving fans what they're looking for, then the movie could be a success.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on April 16, 2020 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
