Gamers everywhere are familiar with the tragedy Cyberpunk 2077. Despite patches and hotfixes from developer CD Projekt Red, the highly-anticipated RPG is still a mess for most players. Modders are now taking things into their own hands with mods that fix many of the underlying issues with CDPR’s vision of the dark future.

Cyberpunk 2077 hit the scene in December of last year and played host to innumerable problems. Players expecting a high-octane role-playing experience were greeted with immersion and game-breaking bugs, tons of glitches, and abysmal performance on last-gen consoles. Critics and players alike were shocked at the overall lack of polish; even the water doesn’t behave like it should in the Cyberpunk universe.

Another issue is the adaptive lighting: the game attempts to simulate pupil dilation of the eyes as the character moves from bright to dark areas and vice-versa. The effect resulting in a blinding white screen when stepping outside from a dark interior, and made driving in a first-person perspective nearly impossible when the sun was shining. This annoying “eye adaptation” – whether it was a bug or intended effect – has been adjusted by modder Dravic to keep the eye strain to a minimum.

In the mod description, Dravic notes that auto-adaptation is fixed by making the brightness adjust slower, avoiding the blinding screen that results from rapid change in lighting. The mod is not without its limitations; apparently this fix only works within the confines of Night City itself, and will not adjust the auto-exposure in the Badlands. The mod also doesn’t work well with other mods that affect the game’s weather. CDPR has brought its own changes to Cyberpunk’s weather with a recent hot-fix, so hopefully gamers will not need to rely on modders to improve that specific area.

Mods such as these have been slowly improving aspects of the game since it launched, with over 7.5 million downloads over the last few months. Players are modding the game almost as much as they mod their character within the game, turning Cyberpunk into a more enjoyable experience that just might save the legacy of the ill-fated futuristic RPG.

CD Projekt Red has promised that it will continuing improving and supporting Cyberpunk 2077. The latest update Hotfix 1.22 went live earlier today, promising optimizations and fixes to bugged quests. The game has a long way to go, and it’s arguable whether or not Cyberpunk will ever live up to the vision that CDPR offered. Nevertheless, it’s encouraging to see the developer stick with the product, and here’s hoping players can one day immerse themselves in the dark future they were promised.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are in development.
