By now, the issues that caused Cyberpunk 2077 to fall woefully short of expectations are well known. CD Projekt Red's ambition was beyond the capabilities of the studio, a too-short schedule for the size of the project was planned, and working conditions were employed that punished developers with endless crunch. The result was a broken Cyberpunk 2077 with missing features and content still absent over a year later. Where CD Projekt Red faltered, however, modders have stepped up. Take for example this new massive metro train system mod.

Uploaded on Sunday, December 19, the Metro System for Cyberpunk 2077 on PC is exactly what it sounds like. Modder keanuWheeze has implemented a full NCART rapid transit system in Cyberpunk 2077, replacing the existing, unusable train system that CD Projekt Red never got around to finishing. The Metro System mod features 19 unique, hand-built metro stations where players can wait for trains to arrive. Trains can then be ridden across Night City.

While not fully featured, the NCART metro train system is impressively done. Once a train arrives, players can sit inside and not only switch between seats, but switch between first and third-person perspective to get a better look out into Night City. It's a new way to see Night City, as well as traverse the city without relying on vehicles. Plus, considering the metro track is already there, it makes a big part of the city suddenly seem useful.

One big negative is that the NCART metro train system isn't an automated feature. It won't move around the city regardless of whether it's being used or not. Rather, the mod will trigger a train only when a player moves into a station to use it. It will despawn as soon as the player is done with it and exits the train station.

Since it's not automated, that makes the Metro System mod feel kind of disconnected from the Cyberpunk 2077 experience. While there are no loading screens added, players will still "jump" when they enter a metro station, then jump again when entering a train. Moving between seats in the train is also a jump, as the player can't move around naturally. As fun as it'd be to leap from a moving train or to escape from pursuit on the metro, that's not how the mod works.

What matters is that keanuWheeze has improved on Cyberpunk 2077 in an interesting and useful way. They've built a feature into the game that CD Project Red left unfinished, providing a service that only modders are fully able to do. Maybe CD Projekt Red will get around to finishing the feature at a later date, but for the time being, the Metro System mod should work just fine for PC players.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
