As the influx of brand new Cyberpunk 2077 information will no doubt indicate, today saw the debut of CD Projekt Red's Night City Wire stream, with the development team revealing tons of new information about its highly-anticipated upcoming game. With a new trailer, some crazy announcements, and a slice of gameplay debuting on the stream, it seems Cyberpunk's newest deep dive has a lot to show to future players.

However, one of the broadcast's biggest reveals was actually separate from the game, with CD Projekt Red announcing that it will be partnering with Studio Trigger and Netflix to produce an anime based in Cyberpunk's universe. The show will be called Cyberpunk Edgerunners and will allegedly be making its way to Netflix in 2022.

Alongside the announcement, the broadcast also unveiled a little more about the upcoming show, with producer Saya Elder elaborating on what fans can expect when it drops in the next couple of years. "When we began this project, we were certain that we didn't want to make a recreation of the game," claims Elder, announcing that "Cyberpunk Edgerunners is a standalone story set in the same universe. The stage is still Night City but everything else is totally new." She even goes on to elaborate exactly what fans can expect when Edgerunners hits Netflix, claiming there will be "new characters [and a] new story." Elder even clarifies why the anime is so important to the franchise as a whole, telling fans "it is going to be a great gateway for newcomers to come and check the Cyberpunk game and the Cyberpunk genre."

Of course, 2022 is still a ways off, however, Edgerunners could be a fantastic addition to Cyberpunk's story that gives players a new glimpse into the world from a fresh perspective. With early fan reactions seeming to indicate that Cyberpunk is going to be a global phenomenon when it hits this fall, it's very likely 2077 could get a sequel, yet, it would definitely take a hefty amount of time for the game to finally launch. This way, players will get a significant new look into the world of Cyberpunk without having to wait years to see it come to fruition.

Studio Trigger is also a very reputable name in the anime scene, with the studio working on several revered movies and TV shows, including Kill La Kill, Inferno Cop, and Little Witch Academia. It's clear that Cyberpunk 2077'animated spinoff will be in good hands, meaning fans should keep their eyes trained on the project as it develops over the next few years.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will release on Netflix in 2022.
