Hotline Miami and My Friend Pedro publisher Devolver Digital has recently taken credit for the Cyberpunk 2077 delay. Developer CD Projekt RED confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed to September, an announcement which left many fans disappointed.

On Twitter, Devolver Digital has said that it is to blame for the Cyberpunk 2077 release date delay after it posted a threat on the social media site back in December 2019. The company joked that "If we don’t hit two million followers by Saturday we’re cancelling all video games" and that Cyberpunk 2077 would be one of the games that it would destroy. Devolver has 198K followers which is 1.82 million short of its goal, so after CD Projekt RED's announcement the company retweeted its threat and said "told y'all."

Devolver also posted a message about the delay on its Chinese language social media. It posted an image of a cat holding two guns in a box full of fish and said "it's not me! I didn't do it! I knew nothing about this!" The tweet has also prompted more memes with many of the company's followers posting crying GIFs and images which seem to be a response to Devolver using its power like this but also at the delay.

Obviously, Devolver doesn't really have the power to cancel Cyberpunk 2077 or any other game it isn't publishing or developing, but it is a bit of fun and Cyberpunk 2077 fans seem to be enjoying themselves. These same fans have mostly taken at delay announcement well and many have been sending CD Projekt RED heartwarming memes. Fans have been telling the developers that they love them and that they can take as much time as they need to get the game ready.

It's unclear whether CD Projekt RED is listening to fans though as the company has confirmed that it will be using development crunch to get the game finished. Crunch development is when developers work large amounts of overtime to get a game released, which has resulted in reported illness, poor health, and little time with their families when crunch is happening. Many have asked for the games industry to end crunch, but some developers keep using it.

CD Projekt RED probably isn't going to stop using crunch to make Cyberpunk 2077, but that doesn't mean it can't change for its next game or big feature. The Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer has also been delayed until after 2021 so maybe in that time it will see the positive messages from fans and let its developers work normal hours.

Cyberpunk 2077 launches on September 17, 2020 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
