A keen-eyed Cyberpunk 2077 player has discovered in-game cars appearing on the road from an unusual place. Although likely not intentional, it appears that cars in the year 2077 can swim as well as they can negotiate the roads of Night City.

Since its debut on December 10th, Cyberpunk 2077 has presented all manner of glitches to players across every platform. While some of these glitches are game-breaking, stopping would-be Night City mercenaries dead in their tracks, others are a bit more comical. Fans quickly put together some hilarious Cyberpunk 2077 glitch compilations, typically showing off flying cars, erratic NPC behavior, and other events encountered within the first few hours of starting the game. As more and more players go farther afield to explore the edges of Night City, some of the game's harder-to-spot oddities are coming to light.

Reddit user u/_Mize recorded footage of cars casually emerging from a body of water as if underwater driving were commonplace in Night City. While players can engage in all sorts of shenanigans with Cyberpunk 2077 cars, driving underwater is not one of them. If a player is careless enough to drive a car into a large body of water, the car will sink as deep as possible. At that point, players must leave the car and swim to the surface, or else face a quick death by drowning. There is no in-game lore pointing to underwater cars, so this probably is not something that CD Projekt Red intended to include in-game.

The Reddit post also highlights that the cars in the distance are actually two-dimensional sprites. To be fair, it's common practice for games to cut corners on background elements, such as Spider-Man's infamous low-polygon "boat people," which Insomniac even acknowledged as a joke in Spider-Man's PS5 remaster. However, Spider-Man players were unlikely to get close to the "boat people," whereas the 2D Cyberpunk 2077 cars are comparatively quite close to the player.

Unfortunately, the game's glitches don't end when players get into the driver's seat. One example discovered live by the streamer Lirik effectively trapped the player in a time loop with an exploding car. This is especially disappointing in light of the vehicle system's potential excitement. Given the range of cars available in Night City, being able to observe, steal, or purchase new cars at any time would give the player variety in how to negotiate the city, if not for the many glitches in the way of potential joyrides.

In all fairness, players willing to delve into a glitch-filled Night City may actually have it easier than those who choose to wait for future patches. While patches will surely remove many of the game's most frustrating bugs, they will likely remove stat-boosting exploits that skip hours of grinding. Granted, these exploits hurt the game's sense of immersion and realism, but many would argue the game's plentiful glitches already do that.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions coming in 2021.
