Thanks to The Witcher series, CD Projekt Red became one of the most respected developers in the world, which is why Cyberpunk 2077 became one of the most hyped games in recent memory. The game does a lot of things well, but its legacy has been rightfully tainted by an absurd amount of bugs that make it unplayable at times, especially for those who are using older PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Underneath all these issues, the intensive RPG has a pretty good story, and it helps that it is set in a world where everyone's body has been cybernetically augmented to some degree. There are plenty of movies out there that Cyberpunk fans would enjoy because of the similar, settings, storytelling, and action, but those fans would probably like a few anime series or films for the same reasons.

10 Ghost In The Shell

Agent Kusanagi Contemplating Life

Cyberpunk may not be one of 2020's best RPGs, but anyone who enjoyed it would love the original Ghost in the Shell animated film.  In this world, technology has advanced to the point that humans can augment or completely replace their bodies with cybernetic parts.

The story follows a cyborg public-security agent named Motoko Kusanagi, who is trying to catch a mysterious hacker. To this day, the film receives praise for its score and visuals, but its narrative – which deals with philosophical themes about self-identity – is masterfully written.

9 Ergo Proxy

Re-L Mayer In A Firefight

If gamers enjoy story-heavy games like Cyberpunk, then they will love a series like Ergo Proxy. It may consist of just 23 episodes, but Ergo Proxy does a lot with the time it's given. In the series, an ecological disaster has forced humanity to live in domed cities, where humans and androids live in peace.

The androids become infected by a virus which makes them self-aware, and chaos ensues shortly after. Inspector Re-L Mayer is tasked with finding the cause of the virus, and in doing so, she discovers a new species of humanoids called Proxies-who were secretly created to rebuild the Earth.

8 Gunslinger Girl

The Assassins Of Gunslinger Girl

Gunslinger Girl is a 13-episode series that focuses on a group of young cybernetic girls and their male handlers. At first glance, these girls appear to be harmless, but they are all in fact highly trained assassins who work for the Italian government.

The girls receive synthesized muscles and carbon fiber frames, which grant them enhanced strength and reflexes, as well as a higher pain threshold. They are all brainwashed and trained by their handlers, and their primary duty is to deal with a rebel faction that wants to bring independence to Northern Italy.

7 No Guns Life

Inspector Inui Out On A Case

There are plenty of characters in Cyberpunk, but none of them have the kind of body modifications seen in No Guns Life. This 24-episode series is set in a near-future where many humans have decided to become cyborgs called Extended.

This world has recently gone through an extensive war, and quite a few Extended soldiers have turned to crime in order to survive. Juzo Inui is an Extended detective who takes cases involving other members of his kind, and his entire head is a giant, functional revolver.

6 Mardock Scramble

Rune Balot With Her AI Companion

Mardock Scramble is an anime film trilogy which deals with some pretty mature themes, so Cyberpunk fans should be captivated by them. The trilogy is set in Mardock City, and it focuses on Rune Balot, a young sex worker who is targeted by a notorious gambler who wants to get rid of her before she can testify against him.

Rune's life is saved by a doctor who transforms her into a cyborg, and he does so by enacting the city's life-preserving emergency ordinance. Rune is given an AI companion who takes the form of a mouse, and it trains her to use her new body.

5 Psycho-Pass

Inspector Tsunemori Speaking With Kogamia

Psycho-Pass is set in a futuristic Japan where crime is nothing more than a mathematical equation, as a powerful bio-mechanical computer network uses criminal minds to measure the biometrics of other citizens to see how close they are to committing a crime.

A rookie inspector, Akane Tsunemori is paired with a latent criminal Enforcer named Shinya Kogamia, who helps to apprehend individuals whose Psycho-Pass score exceeds 100. Like Cyberpunk, this series does a good job of exploring what humans could be capable of.

4 Texhnolyze

Ichise With His Prosthetic Arm

Street brawls are one of the many things players can do in Cyberpunk, and it is one of the reasons why players might like Texhnolyze. This 22-episode series focuses on a street fighter named Ichise, who lives in a dilapidated underground city.

When Ichise loses a fight and angers a promotor, he loses an arm and leg and is left for dead, but he is rescued by a scientist who gives him a pair of prosthetic limbs. Ichise then meets a girl who can see possible futures, and together they try to save their city which is on the brink of war.

3 Battle Angel Alita

Alita After Becoming A Hunter-Warrior

Alita: Battle Angel was released in early 2019, and it managed to make money at the box office despite a lackluster marketing campaign. The movie was based on the Battle Angel Alita manga which also spawned a 2-episode anime OVA.

Like the live-action movie, the OVA tells the story of a female cyborg named Alita who is saved by a cyberphysician. Alita has no memory of her past life, but she slowly regains pieces of her former self, all while working as a Hunter-Warrior-which is basically a cyberpunk bounty hunter.

2 Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Kusanagi In A Firefight

The original Ghost in the Shell movie was released in 1995, and it was so beloved that it received a sequel in the form of a 52-episode series called Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Motoko Kusanagi is back, and she investigates cybercrime and terrorism cases alongside her fellow Section 9 team members.

The first season centers around Kusanagi's search for a hacker nicknamed "The Laughing Man," while the second season deals with the social and political ramifications of a world that has gone through two World Wars.

1 Akira

Tetsuo Being Corrupted By HIs Powers

Released in 1988, Akira is still considered to be one of the greatest sci-fi anime films ever made. The movie is set in a dystopian 2019 and focuses on the leader of a biker gang who watches as his best friend, Tetsuo, becomes a monster after gaining telekinetic powers from a motorcycle accident.

Tetsuo aspires to be better than his friend, and he believes that his newfound powers will do just that. Ultimately, this hubris leads to his downfall. These powers were created by the Neo-Japan government, but they nearly destroy the country which was already filled with corruption and civil unrest.
