Atlus is about to venture back into the middle ages after their last foray with the fantasy RPG Demon’s Souls in 2009. French Developer Kylotonn have teamed up with Atlus to bring The Cursed Crusade to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC next year in the Summer of 2011.
The third person action game is set during the 12th century after a fourth crusade begins. The story revolves around Denz and Esteban, a Templar and mercenary. Even though they hail from very different backgrounds, they are united by their quest to save their souls that will take them far across the holy land. Players won’t have to go on the crusade alone as the game boasts full co-op so that a friend will be able to jump in on the action as Esteban either online or offline.
The combat engine will be weapon-based with over 90 combos, over 130 weapons and a timing-based counter system. The main campaign will also be pleasantly packed with 40 missions spanning over five chapters. Check out the trailer below to get a first glimpse:
The trailer shows off a glance of the weapon-heavy combat and gives the impression that the game will promise tons of flesh-wound causing gameplay in a beautifully rendered world. Heavily focused on melee combat and steeped in a historical period, The Cursed Crusade could be a worthy addition to Atlus’ back-catalog of published games, joining games like 3D Dot Game Heroes.
There have been many rumors of a Demon’s Souls 2 and nothing ever materialized but The Cursed Crusade could end up being the closest thing to a sequel as the spiritual successor. While the developer is different, The Cursed Crusade appears to capture the same tone and style of Demon’s Souls in a different genre of game. Hopefully it won’t be as punishing and brutally difficult as Demon’s Souls for the lesser hardcore groups of gamers. It might be too early to tell but if the high production value of the teaser trailer is any indication, gamers could be in for quite a treat with The Cursed Crusade.
