It's safe to say that Cuphead is one of the most hotly anticipated indie projects of 2017. The game made an immediate impression all the way back at E3 2014 thanks to its completely unique art style, and at this year's E3 we learned it would finally launch this fall.

Now, its developer has gone on record to offer up some information about the platforms that Cuphead will be coming to. From the outset, it's been billed as an Xbox exclusive, but now it's been confirmed that the game will be available on PC as well.

The PC version of the game will launch on Steam and the Windows Store, with a GoG release likely following shortly afterward. Depending on whether or not Cuphead is a success for developer StudioMDHR, we might see the platformer hit Mac and Linux afterward, with the former taking precedence.

The member of the StudioMDHR team also revealed that the company owns the IP, rather than Microsoft. This means that if there is a sequel, it could feasibly hit the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch — although the exclusivity deal on the first installment seems to be pretty cut and dry.

There's a lot of hype surrounding Cuphead, and that makes things very difficult for StudioMDHR. The game looks absolutely stunning, but it remains to be seen whether its gameplay and its longevity will maintain the same high standards that have been set by its strong visual component.

The good news is that we don't have to wait very long to find out for ourselves. After several delays and something of a tumultuous development process, Cuphead is just a few months away from release — and there are no doubt plenty of Xbox and PC gamers who are keen to dive into this throwback platformer as soon as it drops.

Cuphead launches for Xbox One and PC on September 29, 2017.
