The horror genre can be adorable, alluring, and kind, which is one of the reasons a cult led by an adorable cartoon sheep is the perfect focus for a horror game. Massive Monster's latest offering, Cult of the Lamb, is a mix of terrifying and cute, complete with other details that everyone can love like crafting, rogue-like dungeons, and edible minions.

The game is getting rave reviews, and anyone interested in crafting, roguelike dungeons, or being a god on earth would enjoy it. For those just starting the game, here's some handy advice that other cult leaders had to learn through experience. It's not just information about going out and Crusading but on how to maintain order and love among your followers.

6 Weapon Swapping And Recycling

The main character only carries a weapon when on a Crusade, and every sequence starts with offering the Lamb two weapons. One is for physical damage and the other is for magical damage. If the Lamb follows a Crusade path to the sword icon, they can find new weapons and trade them for new ones.

It's possible to leave the old weapon and even come back for it later before killing the boss and moving on, but another less obvious option is to recycle the unused weapon for a few gold coins. If the Lamb doesn't plan on coming back or is happier with the weapon choice, it's the best thing to do.

5 Fussy Followers And How To Handle Them

When the Lamb is relaxing with the Cult, gathering resources, building things, or holding fun events like feasts and bonfires, the flock tends to be fairly happy. Leave for an extended Crusade, however, and all it takes is one dissident member to create trouble in paradise.

Luckily, there are other choices besides just Re-educating the cynic, which is limited in its benefits and only can be done once a day. Other options include sacrificing the wayward follower, sending them off on a Crusade to gather resources, or feeding them a sabotaged meal.

4 Grass Is Bad But Poop Is Worse

Right from the beginning, the flock will have basic needs like food and shelter, and the Lamb's ability to provide them will improve over time. In the beginning, however, there will be naught to eat but berries and grass.

Grassy Gruel, a meal of grass, has a higher chance of making a follower sick, but it's better than letting them starve, and the Grass Eater Doctrine can mitigate these negative effects later if the Lamb is building a kind and gentle cult of herbivores.

On the other hand, certain dishes can make a follower sicken and even die, such as the Bowl of Poop. These kinds of vile dishes are often the subject of quests, but other than that, the Lamb can use a poisonous bowl of feces to rid themselves of a troublesome or disloyal cult member.

3 To Fleece Or Not To Fleece

For those gamers coming to Cult of the Lamb from an RPG background, it's easy to confuse the Fleece with armor or similar protective gear. The one that the Lamb starts with is modest, with no power at all other than looking badass.

It takes a while to unlock these accessories, requiring that the Lamb find special fish or trade forest mushrooms for them. Although the Fleece does have some handy buffs at higher levels, this is offset by something the Fleece takes away in return. Depending on the build, a player might opt to use the old fleece even if they have different options. It's a nice touch but it's not the same as a "chestpiece."

2 Recycling And Upcycling

Compost or cannibalism? A tough choice for any cult leader, but then again, it just depends on the kind of church the Lamb has built. However, this is part of what kind of Doctrines are chosen as the Lamb further indoctrinates their faith.

Sooner or later, cultists are going to pass on, whether via ritual sacrifice, old age, or bad luck on a Crusade, and they remain useful even in death. It's always possible to harvest dead cultists for their precious meat and bones, which are used for Rituals and Recipes alike, even before the Lamb has officially made it a cult Doctrine.

1 Cult Development

The game is designed so every cult the player builds is different, and there's more detail in the choices than a simple case of good or evil. There are possibilities for cults of cannibals, necromancers, hippies, and the righteous and lawfully-minded. It's easier for the Lamb to build the ideal cult if they know some of these details before they get started.

The most obvious choice as to the direction a cult will take is in the Doctrines. However, it also depends on what kind of food the cultists eat, what buildings their leader deems the most important, and their most common Rituals.

Feasts, for example, are a benevolent way to ensure all of the cultists are fat and happy. On the other hand, the Lamb might decide it's easier to sacrifice any trouble followers and save their meat to be used in the kitchen later, which puts discipline and food supply in a neat little woolly bundle.

Cult of the Lamb is currently available on Steam for PC and macOS.
