The Cub Scouts - part of the Boy Scouts of America - have just released a new belt & loop pin badge for an important achievement in any young man's life. Yes, Cub Scouts officially recognizes those who choose to play games instead of going outside, doing, uh, Cub Scout things.

However, it's not quite as bad as it sounds - here are three of the steps any young cub scout needs to take in order to get the Videogame Badge:

  1. Explain why it is important to have a rating system for video games. Check your video games to be sure they are right for your age.
  2. With an adult, create a schedule for you to do things that includes your chores, homework, and video gaming. Do your best to follow this schedule.
  3. Learn to play a new video game that is approved by your parent, guardian, or teacher.

Yes, you must create a schedule that includes videogaming. Best. Badge. Ever!

Additionally, scouts have to teach a parent how to play a game (which, as most gamers remember, is actually insanely hard), compare prices for games in different shops, and organize a family gaming tournament. There's nothing like a bloody chainsaw duel in Gears of War to bring father and son together, just the way the Cub Scouts would have wanted. Or maybe not.

What do you think about the Cub Scouts having a videogame badge? Does this seem wrong to you, or do you think the Boy Scouts realize the need to adapt to modern times?
