When one thinks of Cthulhu, they likely don't think of an altruistic version of it. Instead, it is quite likely that Cthulhu is often conceived as a villainous beast capable of unspeakable actions, as seen in past Cthulhu games, which is opposite of what the mythical creature hopes to accomplish in the upcoming game, Cthulhu Saves Christmas.

In 2010, Cthulhu Saves the World was released on Xbox Live, bringing gamers an RPG with a humorous take on Cthulhu. It had later been released on PC in 2011. The game was fairly well-received by both fans and critics to the point where the game's developer, Zeboyd Games, has decided to make a sequel in the form of Cthulhu Saves Christmas.

The developer announced the upcoming sequel on its official website, where it provides a brief synopsis of the game. Santa Claus has apparently been kidnapped by the "League of Christmas Evil." As such, it is Cthulhu’s job to save Santa with the assistance of "Belsnickel, the Snow Maiden, and Baba Yaga-chan."

Furthermore, the developer writes that Cthulhu and its cohorts will battle "the Krampus, Mari Lwyd, and other Christmas League of Evil villains in unique, turn-based combat!" As well, players will be able to "insanify" foes and form bonds in "life sim" parts of the game. More details and a trailer will head gamers’ way soon, the description finishes.

Lovecraft fans will likely be excited by this news. Given the relatively positive reception to the original game, especially compared to other Cthulhu games such as Call of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game, there’s no doubt this will breathe some fresh air into the Cthulhu brand. After this sequel’s eight-year absence, it seems it’s about time for Cthulhu fans to get some worthy content.

While the disappointing Lovecraftian game Sinking City came out recently, it still appears that Cthulhu might be deserving of a dedicated title that gives the godly being its due. Cthulhu is a brand that is near and dear to the hearts of many and has not quite yet gotten a video game adaptation that sufficiently pays homage to it. Hopefully, Cthulhu Saves Christmas will at least curb the appetites of fans hungry for a fantastic Cthulhu video game.

Cthulhu Saves Christmas is in development for PC.
