There are only so few games that are known for pushing the limits of gaming hardware and Crysis tops that list. The game was so well known for its hardware requirements that it spawned the infamous "But can it run Crysis?" meme whenever questions around high system requirements were raised. Now it appears that Crytek, the studio behind Crysis, is prepping up for its latest installment as it announced the Game Director for the Crysis 4 project.Although it has been over nine years since Crysis 3, the franchise has experienced renewed life among fans thanks in large part to the Crysis Remastered trilogy. The series got a noticeable facelift when the remastered trilogy was released back in October 2021. In fact, the original Crysis on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 compared to Crysis Remastered is worlds apart in terms of graphic quality. But with news of Crysis 4 on the way, expectations for another hardware-pushing title will likely be high.Crytek announced that the studio has hired Mattias Engstrom as the Game Director for Crysis 4, who is starting on the project this week. Engstrom has previously worked as Game Director on the massively successful Hitman 3, which incidentally also got the remastered treatment recently. In addition to Engstrom's announcement, Crytek has also posted a list of vacancies exclusively for Crysis 4, indicating that it may be ramping up its development efforts.
Back in January, Crysis 4 was officially announced to be in the works following an accidental leak by Crytek China. In a blog post detailing the announcement, Crytek CEO Avni Yerli mentioned that the game is still in its early development stages and that it will be a while until fans can expect anything. The post also stated that the upcoming title will be a next-gen shooter which is a likely sign that Crysis 4 may be pushing hardware limits as its predecessors did.
While it may be some time until more details about Crysis 4 are announced, fans of the series can relive the experience thanks to the Crysis Remastered trilogy. Although the remaster wasn't without its issues following launch, the developer has since released several updates aimed at improving performance with one update said to have improved Crysis Remastered performance by 81%.
