'Crysis 2' Multiplayer Influenced by 'Timesplitters'

Crysis 2 Multiplayer

Crysis 2 is finally making its debut and although Crysis was always lauded for its fantastic visuals and exciting single player campaign, the multiplayer was no slouch either. Crytek is stepping it up a notch further for the sequel, taking some ideas from a classic title that should have any true FPS fan giddy with joy.

Earlier this month we got a rather detailed look at skill progression, dog tags, and perks in the multiplayer mode of Crysis 2. Hasit Zala, current executive producer at Crytek and former lead programmer for the Timesplitters series, recently relayed a little more information about the multiplayer that might make this a day one purchase for you.

CVG asked the Crytek UK developer, along with some of his colleagues, if Crysis 2 would contain some of the knowledge gained from the spiritual Goldeneye follow-up - Timesplitters. Their answer? "Absolutely."

"I think the reason that Crytek came and looked at us as a development house was the heritage we had and the DNA we had in the type of gameplay and multiplayer experience that we developed. That was very much part of the whole marriage with Crytek. They knew the kind of games we make, that we wanted to make a high-action, fast-paced multiplayer game."

High-action, fast-paced multiplayer is not uncommon in a world of Gears of War 3, Killzone 3 and Halo: Reach, yet the sensibilities of the Rare FPS era have certainly evolved as technology has improved. Knowing that a development group like Free Radical (now Crytek UK) has built this multiplayer should be a decent indicator that we will not only be playing a quality online game, but having a ton of fun while doing it.

It may not seem like much, but after releasing Haze in 2008, the UK branch of Crytek has something to prove. Do you think that the Crysis 2 multiplayer will stand out in the FPS arena?

Crysis 2 comes out tomorrow, March 22, 2011, for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
