Few games are right at the intersection of silly and enormous like Crusader Kings 3. The game has as many tricks for ruling super effectively as it has tricks for making games as ridiculous as possible.

A big reason for this is that Crusader Kings 3 is simultaneously a game on a small and large scale. The rulers and their foibles are tied directly into the running of a country, creating a grand strategy dynamic with more layers than other games. This opens the possibility of really ridiculous rulers, and now Paradox has expanded that possibility with the addition of the custom ruler creator.

Already a feature in Crusader Kings 2, patch 1.2 of Crusader Kings 3 lets players design their own starting monarch. While there are some limitations, like not being able to design their spouse and kids, there are still a huge dearth of options. This is not the same as dressing up a character, it allows full customization of backstory, religion, personality, etc. In this way, players who are not history buffs can get into ruling through their own character on the throne.

Obviously the ruler will still die after awhile and from then on what traits future rulers have is somewhat out of players' hands. Still, out of all the crazy things players can do in Crusader Kings 3, making the most ridiculous ruler possible is definitely up there. Hopefully there will be a series of insane, monstrous kings on display before too much longer. And if it gets incorporated into mods, there will truly be no limit to who rules Europe.

Crusader Kings 3 is available for PC.
