Anime streaming service Crunchyroll hosted its virtual anime convention CRX, bringing together special guests and industry insiders for a virtual convention. The aftermath brought some good tidings about things to come. News about a Crunchyroll original, a Korean webtoon adaptation and a returning show this fall were the most notable among a slew of announcements.

CRX this year recognized its current lineup with panels on  Rent-A-Girlfriend and The God of High School then made announcements about shows to come. The first was an original series called Onyx Conquest slated to debut on November 21 complete with a fresh trailer and names for the English voice cast. The second was a premiere date for the Noblesse, the awaited adaptation of a popular Korean WebToon and then Rising of a Shield Hero returning for a second season in 2020.

The summer season is almost over with many of the shows wrapping up their runs within weeks of CRX and a virtual convention was the perfect place to drop details about a fall season that will be jam packed with new shows and returning series delayed by COVID-19 in spring. A fresh trailer about Noblesse was the biggest news to come out of CRX. The show is an adaptation of a comic running in popular South Korean publisher Webtoons and will be the third in a partnership that has brought two other popular comics from the company to Crunchyroll.

Both The God of High School and Tower of God have proven to be popular new shows in 2020 and Noblesse seems poised to follow the same success. The show debuts October 5th and follows follows an ancient, powerful recently-awoken vampire that now lives life as a high school student. The virtual CRX panel offered up a five minute preview of the first episode along with the release date.

Isekai anime have been a genre staple for the last few years and one of its more popular shows Rising of a Shield Hero finally got an announcement that a second season will debut in 2020, but it’s still unclear whether it will be in the fall or winter. Isekai are an anime genre that always follows a main character that somehow dies in the real world and accidentally “falls” into another one. Every season for the past several years has had at least one show that uses a version of the Isekai formula.

The Crunchyroll original show Onyx Equinox also got its release date, fresh details and a trailer. The show is a fantasy cartoon centered around Mesopoamerican folklore with Sofia Alexander, the artist behind the Nickelodeon show Invader Zim and the Powerpuff Girls reboot, acting as Executive Producer.

With half the year done, CRX this year felt like preparation for the last two seasons of 2020. As tumultuous as the year has been, the number of new and returning shows that are lined up will leave no shortage of distractions.

Noblesse will release on October 5 and Onyx Equinox on November 21 all on Crunchyroll.
