CrossfireX is shutting down and ending sales completely just one year after the first-person shooter launched on Xbox Game Pass. The troubled history of CrossfireX will soon come to its conclusion as ongoing development of game content ceases and servers remain active for a limited time.

Developed by Remedy Entertainment and Smilegate Entertainment, CrossfireX is an action-packed FPS title set in a world where the influence of private military forces knows no bounds. After several years in development, CrossfireX received its February 10, 2022, release date at The Game Awards 2021. Unfortunately, CrossfireX would launch in its free-to-play multiplayer state, and the single-player campaign was missing entirely for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. The multiplayer side of CrossfireX was panned for its glaring amount of bugs and glitches, poor controls, and uninspiring content. CrossfireX's single-player campaign developed by Remedy would launch six days later on February 16, 2022, but the newly-added content still left much to be desired by players.

Smilegate Entertainment published a news release announcing that CrossfireX is shutting down completely on May 18, and the game's sales on the Xbox Store would be halted immediately. As of February 3, purchases made within the last 14 days will be eligible for a refund after submitting a refund request to Xbox Support. Further, no new content will be added to the game such as maps, modes, and camos. The developers encourage players to enjoy all previously purchased and unlocked in-game content before CrossfireX servers shut down on May 18. This includes the single-player component of CrossfireX, which will also be unavailable after the servers go offline.

crossfirex multiplayer available

An official FAQ for CrossfireX's impending closure was made available, reiterating many of the details shared within the developer's latest news release. Smilegate Entertainment states CrossfireX was "ultimately not where it needed to be" despite the development team continuously working hard to deliver fixes, new maps, game modes, and content. Official CrossfireX social media accounts will also cease all activity, and the game's Discord server will remain active in a limited support capacity.

CrossfireX was one of Metacritic's worst games last year, and the game's public perception could not recover at all after the disappointing launch. Moreover, the talented Remedy Entertainment could not develop a worthwhile single-player experience for CrossfireX to help alleviate the multiplayer component's grievances.

CrossfireX's launch issues were a troubling sign from the start, leading some players to believe the game would live on borrowed time. The sentiment appears to have been well warranted as CrossfireX prepares to shut down permanently this May. Ultimately, CrossfireX just could not continue to compete with the likes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Overwatch 2 in the online first-person shooter space.

CrossfireX is available now for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
