Crossfire X has been recently launched in one of the most prolific days in Xbox Game Pass' history, since then leaving much to be desired. At least, one issue seems now resolved, with the single-player campaign promised to the subscribers being finally available.

The child of two separate developers, Crossfire X is a first-person shooter set in a world where private military companies run amok, and a rare example of an Xbox game without a PC port. Finnish Remedy Entertainment, famed for the recent title Control, created the single-player component, while the South Korean Smilegate Entertainment developed the multiplayer part of the game, building on its experience on the previous Crossfire games.

Less known in the western world, Crossfire has become a highly popular title in countries such as China and South Korea, with the original chapter of the saga having reached the astonishing amount of one billion players; Crossfire X is an attempt to export such success to a different audience, hence the collaboration with the Finnish studio.

In that sense, Remedy Entertainment's participation created great expectations regarding the campaign component, only to leave a bitter taste in their mouth when, on February 10, the game debuted without its promised single-player part. The issue appears to have finally been resolved with today's update.

Operation Catalyst, such has been named the first part of the now available campaign, is clearly inspired by classic Call of Duty games, with solid if arcadey shooting mechanics. The setting, the fictional Eastern European country of "Azkharzia," could not be more generic, however, resulting in a decently fun but "more of the same" experience. The chief problem is that this very campaign should have been available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers at launch, but it hasn't been for almost a whole week; another nail in the coffin for an already atrocious debut of the multiplayer part, which has scored negative reviews.

On their part, the developers are trying to do a bit of damage control. Not only did they manage to finally fix Operation Catalyst, but Smilegate Entertainment released a statement that makes amends and promises scores of improvements: the most pressing ones, balance issues, controller sensitivity problems, and the CAR-4 weapon not functioning properly, should have already been tackled by today's patch, while further customization and the badly needed new maps have been assured in the near future. Perhaps there is still hope for a Crossfire X in a much better shape.

Crossfire X is available for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
