Development house Certain Affinity, known for their work on various Halo map packs, Left 4 Dead, and even Black Ops, will be working on a XBLA action-RPG entitled Crimson Alliance. This isn’t the first title Certain Affinity has worked on for XBLA, as many of you will fondly remember Age of Booty, a pirate-themed real time strategy.
Releasing this Summer, Crimson Alliance will be singleplayer or cooperative (up to three players) hack ‘n’ slash with RPG character development. Not an entirely new groundbreaking genre, but it’s one that works.
Players will be able to choose from an Assassin character, Wizard, and Mercenary to do battle against the Cult of the Soul Siren. Given the standard storylines of the genre, we’ll assume that the Cult of the Soul Siren is probably going to destroy/take over the world.
Each class will have a certain specialty, with five specific abilities tied to it. The Assassin can control time, the Wizard has elemental mastery, and the Mercenary has incredible martial arts prowess. Each class can level up by collecting Soul Anchors that contain heroic spirits or by finding treasure.

While some people may scoff at the idea of having yet another dungeon crawler available on the XBLA Marketplace, it’s important to note that Certain Affinity isn’t just a random developer. It was started by Max Hoberman, an ex-Bungie employee who was the lead designer on Halo 2 and Halo 3‘s multiplayer, and is staffed by several other industry veterans. So when a company who has experience creating engaging online multiplayer launches a new title, it may be a wise decision to pay close attention.
Dungeon crawlers are fun for any kind of player. Whether that person is ‘hardcore’ and deep into character customization like they would be in Diablo or just enjoys bashing things to death and shooting magic like they would in Castle Crashers. Dungeon crawlers are still a popular genre and won’t be going away any time soon.
Crimson Alliance will be bringing one more option for fans in Summer 2011 for the Xbox 360.
