Out of the thousand or so Pokemon that exist today, there are plenty of creepy ones. Of course, not all of these belong to the Ghost-type, though the majority of the creepiest creatures in the Pokemon games do relate to the undead in one way or another. Ones that stick out include Pokemon like Drifloon, who guides children to the afterlife, and Froslass, whose penchant for eating frozen souls and keeping their bodies as trophies seems a little dark for a series rated E for everyone.
It's not just the lore behind these creatures either, with some of the cries featured throughout the many Pokemon games being pretty spine-chilling as well. Froslass, for example, sounds like a woman screaming for help in a blizzard, but there are plenty of other Pokemon with equally creepy cries, even some that players may not remember. Once they hear them again though, it'll take players right back to when they first encountered these creepy Pokemon cries
1 Parasect
This Gen 1 Bug/Grass-type has been overtaken by a parasitic mushroom of the tochukaso variety. The Japanese name of caterpillar fungus (Ophiocordyceps sinensis) is a distant species of the Cordyceps fungus known to take over insects and turn them into a zombie-like state.
Unlike its pre-evolution Paras, the tochukaso mushrooms have entirely taken over its brain and body. As a result, Parasect's cry sounds more like a screech of pain. Still, it could also be interpreted as the mushroom communicating with other fungi rather than the insect itself.
2 Electabuzz
Pokemon Red players would first come across Electabuzz in the Kanto Power Plant. As it's abandoned, it's already a pretty creepy place to enter for the first time, but if trainers aren't paying attention when they inevitably run into the Electric-type, its shrieking cry will put them on edge.
While it's not necessarily terrifying, in the context of an abandoned building, the surprise of hearing such a shrill noise is enough to make anyone jump. On top of that, Electabuzz is based on a creepy piece of Japanese folklore involving the Oni. This ogre wears tiger skin as clothing and can be imbued with the powers of thunder and lightning.
3 Milotic
Milotic is meant to be the personification of beauty, but its cry is quite haunting. It goes completely against the Pokemon's nature, which is supposed to be that of a friendly and helpful disposition. Milotic lives at the bottom of large lakes, so this cry isn't something that players would want to hear in the dead of night.
The fear of hearing Milotic's cry can also be traced back to when most players will have encountered it – during that Champion battle against Cynthia in Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl. So many teams have been wrecked by the sheer power of this Pokemon, and its cry can often be a reminder of that.
4 Kricketune
Kricketune's iconic "delelele whoooop!" cry has been a favorite among fans for quite some time, particularly since it became a meme. The cry is already one of the strangest within the Pokemon games, but when it made a return in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, it did so in a surprisingly creepy way.
Like the altered cries for Dynamaxed Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield, Alpha Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Arceus had their cries turned to eleven; including Kricketune. As the first Alpha that player's come across, it's fiercely boosted and echoed. With its volume turned up to the max, Kricketune's cry is creepy when heard from a distance as players explore Hisui.
5 Spiritomb
Spiritomb is about as creepy as a ghost can look in Pokemon, but its cry is even more harrowing. The Ghost/Dark-type Pokemon sounds like it's being played through a machine backward, adding to its already demonic demeanor. Having been bound to the Odd Keystone to keep the malevolent spirits it's made up of at bay, its cry is even more terrifying.
Like Milotic, some players will have flashbacks whenever they hear Spiritomb make an appearance, thanks to it being a hard hitter on Cynthia's team. It's an incredibly powerful Pokemon in certain circumstances and its cry is one of the creepiest in the Pokemon franchise.
6 Lumineon
Lumineon is a beautifully understated Pokemon that doesn't nearly get enough love. Its pre-evolution Finneon is adorable and has an equally cute cry to go with it. Lumineon, on the other hand, sounds like something players would hear in their nightmares.
While the majestic echoes of Lumineon's call are somewhat hypnotizing, it's not something players would want to come across in the dead of night at sea. Hearing Lumineon cry without seeing it as players sail the seas of the Cobalt Coastlands in Legends Arceus is spine-chilling, thanks to the mystical verberation and echoes of its sound.
7 Froslass
If the Pokedex entry for Froslass wasn't creepy enough on its own, its cry certainly is. Froslass is believed to have formed from the spirit of a woman lost in the mountains, and its cry sounds like a combination of a woman's scream and a whoosh of freezing cold air.
Seeing as it can freeze Pokemon and humans with its -60 degree Fahrenheit breath, the cry of Froslass is a perfect rendition of its Pokedex entry. However, it's frightening to hear when wandering the frozen tundra of the Alabaster Islands in Legends Arceus, as Froslass is particularly difficult to find.
8 Annihilape
After what seemed like an eternity, Primeape finally got the evolution it's always deserved in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. After using Rage Fist 20 times, Primeape's anger gets to such a level that it transcends its body, becomes a ghost, and gains power "that is unfettered by the limits of its physical body," as its Pokedex description reads.
Now undead, Annihilape's cry is absolutely petrifying. Accompanied by what sounds like snapping twigs or broken bones, Annihilape's cry sounds like a guttural, slowed-down version of Primeape's cry with a bit of reverb mixed in, making it one of the most terrifying cries in the Pokemon games.
9 Klawf
Klawf is very clearly a crab, sharing the same coloring as Krabby and Kingler, with a bulkier design. Unlike those Water-types, however, Klawf is a massive Rock-type that can be encountered as a Titan Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
Even when it isn't in its Titan form, Klawf's cry is harrowing. It sounds like someone screaming in prolonged pain that gets excessively louder, which is surprising to hear when players meet it for the first time in the wild. Add to that some weird snapping sounds like Annihilape, and Klawf has one hell of a bizarre cry.
10 Cetitan
Cetitan's cry certainly packs a punch, especially compared to the adorable noises of its pre-evolution Cetoddle. Standing as one of the most prolonged cries in Pokemon, Cetitan's cry is just as epic as the creature itself, which is primarily based on the Narwhal and other whales.
Like an extended version of Klawf's cry, the noise Cetitan makes seems like a pained scream which is petrifying to hear in the distance when climbing Glaseado Mountain. It takes some getting used to in battle, but eventually, Cetitan's howl sounds like a typical bulky Pokemon that players would happily have on their team; even if its cry still slightly creeps them out.
