Battle Royale games have been all the rage lately, no doubt thanks in part to the immense $223 million Fortnite made in March. With interest increasing, more Battle Royale style games are being introduced which may quickly oversaturate the market. To properly contend with the current Battle Royale giants, a new game will have to innovate substantially to hold its footing, and Crazy Justice may have found the perfect way to do that as it is now the first official Battle Royale game to head to the Nintendo Switch.

Crazy Justice reached its crowdfunding goal of $50,000 last October, and it has lofty aspirations for what it wants to deliver as a Battle Royale game. The cel-shaded superhero shooter resembles Fortnite aesthetically and includes building as well as destructive environments. However, it’s embarking on a similar yet different path from the giant through Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch Cross-play, while Fortnite offers cross-play between particular platforms.

The developers showed off this feature in a new video focusing on cross-play between the Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch. Despite the video, the feature will work between the PC as well as the other consoles, except for the PS4. Not only that, they also emphasized that cross-play will be optional, and players can choose to play with their own hardware’s population or play with others. Notably, the Nintendo Switch version will also feature motion controls.

This comes as substantially good news for fans of the genre as well as Switch owners since Fortnite currently offers cross-play in some form between nearly every platform except for the Switch. The game’s success may ride on the fact that it’s the only one of its kind to hit the console, although even that may be a closing window.

Rumors suggest that Black Ops 4 might bring its own Battle Royale mode to the Switch. Crazy Justice, however, has a tone akin to Fortnite’s light-hearted, cartoony, spirit instead of the grittier and more aggressive tone of the Call of Duty franchise. Therefore, the two games might appeal to different audiences even if they’re on the same platform.

Instead, Crazy Justice might see more contention from the titan itself, as rumors also suggest Fortnite is heading the Switch’s way. To pull ahead, Crazy Justice will have to rely on its nuances such as four player split-screen, as well as motion controls on the Switch.

If other Battle Royale games are any measure, Crazy Justice will be facing an uphill battle. Radical Heights lost 82 percent of its player base in two weeks, and to avoid that the upcoming game will need a combination of luck and innovation. Timing is everything, in this regard, and if Crazy Justice can get to the Switch first it might at least get a solid foot on the ground, unlike its predecessors.

Crazy Justice is scheduled to release for PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PS4 in the second quarter of 2018.
