Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled proved to be a big hit when it launched in June 2019. While some players bemoaned its unforgiving level of difficulty, other reviewers of Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled enjoyed the challenge. Developer Beenox’s remaster of the kart racing game originally developed by Naughty Dog for the original PlayStation faithfully recreated CTR from the ground up and tossed in a number of new features as well.

A recent PlayStation Store listing has many fans wondering whether a dedicated next-gen version of the game may be incoming. A Reddit user posted an image of their PS5 user interface, explaining that when they went to download the PS4 version of Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled from the PlayStation Store, two download links appeared in the dropdown menu. This has led some fans to speculate that an unannounced upgraded PS5 version of the game might be in the works.

Of course, the PS5 listing of CTR: Nitro-Fueled might simply be a UI bug. The fact that the two game listings are identical lends some weight to the likelihood that this is just a dashboard error. The PlayStation 5 has experienced a few technical glitches since it launched in November 2020, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the phantom listing could disappear into the ether of video game rumors that went nowhere.

In the meantime, the current version of CTR: Nitro-Fueled, which can be enjoyed on the new console thanks to the PS5’s backward compatibility, has plenty to offer players. The game features local races, online multiplayer, as well as an adventure mode with unlockable bosses, areas, and characters. The remaster also introduces customizable karts, cinematic cutscenes, additional characters, and a new challenge mode called Ring Rally.

Shortly following the release of CTR: Nitro-Fueled, eight limited-time monthly Grand Prix events took place, with each introducing a new race track to the game. After the last Grand Prix event in March 2020, the “Beenox Pack” containing four game modes and a variety of content was released as a grand finale. With that, developer Beenox confirmed that there would be no further updates for Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled.

Fans of the series still looking to satisfy their bandicoot craving have Crash Bandicoot: On the Run to look forward to. The mobile title, scheduled for a March 2021 release, will be an endless running game that has the famous marsupial on a quest to collect Nitro fuel as he navigates through fiery lava pits, dodges laser beams, and jumps over steaming geysers.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled is available on PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
