The PlayStation Ireland Twitter account indicates the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy will be a timed exclusive for the PS4, prompting speculation about a multiplatform release.

Many seasoned PlayStation gamers were delighted to hear that a remastered version of the first three Crash Bandicoot games was in development for the PlayStation 4 when the collection was announced at E3 2016. However, there's now evidence that the N Sane Trilogy remaster might be a multiplatform release.

Earlier this week, the PlayStation Ireland Twitter account replied to a question from a fan who was asking whether the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy was a PlayStation 4 exclusive. The account confirmed that it was, as many would have expected, given the character's close ties to the PlayStation brand.

However,  the same Twitter account appeared to issue a retraction today. "It has been fantastic to see the excitement from Crash fans around the world following Activision's confirmation that the N-Sane Trilogy will launch on 30th June 2017," read a pair of tweets posted earlier today. "To clarify our earlier post, it will be coming to PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro first."

The wording of the statement seems to deliberately avoid referring to the N Sane Trilogy as a PlayStation exclusive. Indeed, there would be little need for clarification if the collection was only going to be released for the PlayStation 4.

The N Sane Trilogy was originally announced during Sony's press conference at E3 last year, which led many to believe that the project was an exclusive. However, this has never been officially confirmed by either Sony or Activision.

That said, the possibility of the collection appearing on other platforms could hinge on the game's performance on the PlayStation 4. Alternatively, it could be a timed exclusive, giving Activision the freedom to port the game to other platforms after a stipulated period of time has elapsed.

It would be strange to play through Crash's early adventures on an Xbox One, but that doesn't seem completely outside the realm of possibility at this point. A PC release is perhaps more likely, but it's difficult to predict Activision's plans for the game.

Crash Bandicoot is a legendary character to scores of gamers — but the fact is, he hasn't been relevant in years. The N Sane Collection could be a huge hit, or a complete flop, so it makes sense that Activision is keeping all options open when it comes to recouping its investment.

Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy launches for the PlayStation 4 on June 30, 2017.
