10 Willy The Wombat

Everyone knows and loves Crash Bandicoot, the name is now iconic and has gone down in video game history, and it fits him so well. However, at one stage Crash Bandicoot was going to be something totally different.

Originally, when Naughty Dog decided that they wanted to focus their game on a character inspired by Taz the Tasmanian Devil from the Looney Tunes show, the character they had in mind was a wombat.

Crash would actually have been called Willie the Wombat, but thankfully the creators ended up stumbling across a bandicoot in an Australian wildlife guide and the decision was changed.

9 Hating Crash

Can you imagine actually hating the lovable Crash Bandicoot? One of the most popular and beloved video game characters of all time? Well, at the time of release, Sony's CEO, Ken Kutaragi did.

He is often credited for making PlayStation the success that it has become, but he actually hated the Crash Bandicoot character and game, rowing with people from Naughty Dog over the design of the game.

He had originally wanted the original PS One to stand out from family games like Super Mario, making the console a little more serious, which is something that Crash simply did not do.

8 There Is A Real Crash Bandicoot

Those of you thinking that Crash Bandicoot is simply just an animated video game character may be pleasantly surprised to learn you are wrong, as there is an actual real-life bandicoot that has been named after him.

Obviously following the success of the game, the idea of a Crash Bandicoot became a popular idea, but this isn't something that some zoo did as a marketing campaign for people to visit.

No, a scientist discovered some fossiled remains of a bandicoot that was previously unknown and they made the decision to name it the Crash Bandicoot, meaning he has an entire sub-species devoted to him.

7 The Deleted Level

While Crash Bandicoot is intended to be fun for the family, it cannot be denied that there are many levels that are actually incredibly difficult, with the need for perfectly timed jumping being high.

While this may frustrate many gamers, for others it is a whole host of fun, yet even the developers drew the line with one particular level, called Stormy Ascent, which ended up being deleted.

The level was so tricky and tough, as a step up from the also difficult Slippery Climb level, that the developers decided to simply get rid of it.

6 There Are No Apples

Okay, it's time to clear up a big mistake that a lot of gamers have been making for years now, and that is that there are actually no apples within the Crash Bandicoot world, despite what people may think.

When you crash through a box and see some fruit, which Crash has an unbelievable appetite for, most people have presumed that they are apples, however, they are actually called Wumpa fruits.

Of course, there is no such thing as a Wumpa fruit, with this being made up specifically for the game, and according to a developer, they do taste like apples, and they are a hybrid of an apple and a mango.

5 A Late Crate

The wooden boxes that are placed all around every level of each Crash Bandicoot game are a staple of the franchise at this point, and it is hard to image playing the game wihout bouncing on them.

Whether you are doing it to release the Wumpa fruit within or simply because you enjoy tornado-ing through various items, either way, it is a whole lot of fun to do and is something that game is known for.

However, they were not actually added to the game until incredibly late on, with the idea being that some levels were a little too straightforward, and the boxes would add a different dimension to them.

4 Pamela Anderson Inspiration

You might be thinking how does Pamela Anderson have any relation to the Crash Bandicoot series, but she actually has more influence on the games than most people understand.

When Naughty Dog made the decision to create a girlfriend for Crash Bandicoot, they decided to take inspiration from Pamela Anderson for some reason, and because of that, her original look was totally inspired by her.

That is the reason the character is blonde-haired and has a buxom during the original game, although they did end up replacing Tawana for Coco-Bandicoot to make it more family-friendly.

3 Making Gaming History

One of the reasons that the Crash Bandicoot games were so popular was because it was just simply tons of fun, but what many people do not realize was this game actually changed the video gaming landscape.

The original Crash Bandicoot was actually the first game in history where the player was behind the hero, with Crash spending most of his time running ahead, as seen in the image above.

This was the first platformer that wasn't a side-scrolling game such as Sonic the Hedgehog to do this, and many games have copied that aspect since.

2 Seeing His Face

Following on nicely from the previous point, because Crash spent 90% of the game running ahead, gamers never really got the chance to see his face, which worried the creators.

There were concerns amongst Naughty Dog that people wouldn't connect with Crash without seeing his face, and therefore they decided to add the classic boulder scenes simply so that people would know what he looks like.

Seeing Crash run away from the boulder is one of the only times you actually see his face in that first game, and that was an intentional decision for the benefit of the player.

1 Silence Please

Something that has always been questioned during these games is why Crash Bandicoot doesn't actually speak. Sure, he mutters a "Whoa" every now and then after a cool move, but he doesn't actually have any real dialogue.

It was an interesting decision to make as most main characters in a game will speak at some point as it helps make them feel more relatable for the gamer, no matter what species the character happens to be.

However, the creators wanted Crash to feel goofy and fun-loving, believing that voices for characters always ended up being lame and distracting from their identities, so they kept clear and kept him quiet.
