Mario is one of those characters that likes to get everywhere. Or at least, fans like it when Mario can cross over into other franchises and universes. Not content with seeing him dominate the Nintendo market and being the titular character in countless games, one fan has created a mod for the PC version of Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time in which players will be able to take control of the world's most famous plumber.

A user by the name of SponeBobbleTea released the Mario-Crash mod on ModDB just a few days ago, and while it's only been downloaded a handful of times so far, both Crash Bandicoot 4 and Mario fans may be curious about it. Not much has been said about it on the download page, but there are several images so people can see what the mod looks like. However, one source says that this is a character swap only, which means it's just an aesthetic modification.

What this essentially means is that while players will be able to play Mario in Crash's world, it will still effectively be Crash, just with Mario's model. Therefore, those who download it won't be able to gain access to any of Mario's moves. It is simply just a fun-looking mod. Modding is a time-honored tradition when it comes to PC gaming, with some games, such as Morrowind, being kept alive for years with the help of a dedicated community that seeks to breathe new life into games that have been on the market for decades.

Crash 4 was released in October 2020 to high praise, appealing to many newcomers and to those who grew up with the original games. Despite it being labelled as number four, It's About Time is the eighth installment in the franchise and is touted as a sequel to the remastered Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. Given the series' unfathomable popularity, it's hardly surprising that fans are more than happy to tinker with the game to give it some new zest.

There was also mobile game Crash Bandicoot: On The Run, which not only achieved 8 million downloads within days of release, but has also helped to boost sales of Crash Bandicoot 4. It seems that both are working in tandem to help each other out. Not that either of them really need much of a sales push, given that the Crash name is known throughout much of the gaming community.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
