The Crash Bandicoot series recently saw a revival through the N. Sane Trilogy and Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled, and an announcement earlier this year for Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time shows that the wily orange creature is back to stay. Today, it was announced that those excited for Crash 4 will have the chance to play it early, but only if they do something specific.

If players want access to the Crash 4 demo that will be available on September 16, they will need to pre-order the game itself. Strangely, demos are usually used to win new potential players over as opposed to being given out as a pre-order bonus. Still, with the game bringing back fan-favorite locations like N. Sanity Beach, there will likely be some old school Crash fans excited to see some of the game early.

It is also worth noting that the Crash 4 demo will only be available for digital owners, another surprising decision on the part of Activision and Toys for Bob. The demo is being looked at more as early access by the developers, but it is an interesting strategy, nonetheless. Perhaps the demo will become available to all players when the full version of Crash 4 releases on October 2 so that everyone can try out Crash's brand new abilities.

The demo will include two of the levels that have been showcased heavily by Crash 4 developer Toys for Bob: Snow Way Out and Dino Dash. The latter features the dinosaurs mentioned in the title, and the former allows players to take the role of Doctor Neo Cortex. While the villainous Cortex has only been playable a few times throughout the series, he will be controllable often in the game, along with Tawna and Crash adversary Dingo Dile.

Crash 4 seems to have a lot of content, with the stunning Inverted Mode proving to be a big new feature. Essentially a mirror mode, the option allows players to replay stages from a different angle with new visuals. With new characters, abilities, modes, and plenty of stages, Crash completionists should have a lot to do.

Crash 4 seems a true modern Crash game, and the game’s story is set to offer answers on Crash and Coco’s origin through the new flashback levels. If players want to get their hands on the game early, all they need to do is pre-order a digital copy.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time will be available on October 2 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
