Crackdown 2, the sequel to the popular open world X-Box 360 exclusive title, is moving along nicely in production - something that some said would never happen after the first game warranted strong desire for another installment from fans.

The first Crackdown featured co-op, which was a nice but limited feature. Crackdown 2 will also allow for co-op gameplay, improved to allow for 4 players, but it also introduces competitive play with up to 16 players where your supersoliders can test their might against each other.

At TGS this week, Ruffian Games (the new developer taking over for Realtime Worlds) unveiled several gameplay videos for Crackdown 2 including a multiplayer video presenting the new competitive mode. Check it out after the jump along with the announcement trailer from E3.

What has me intrigued about the sequel is the upgrade in co-op to feature four players, something fans want from every game. Unfortunately, they've not confirmed how it can be played, whether or not it's restricted to online play. However, we can likely expect it not to allow for the splitscreen option many fans are hoping for.

Here's the Multiplayer video:

I don't know about you, but my X-Box can support four controllers - why do developers for consoles practically never let me utilize that?

If it's two-person splitscreen and system-linkable up to 4 (allowing two per console similar to Gears of War 2, Halo 3 & ODST) then I'm interested, otherwise I'm not excited and I'll just play the single player portion. I prefer to play with my friends in the same room for co-operative play - that's the real gaming experience.
