Ah, Crackdown. Hands down, no question about it, the very best game every made about freely exploring a giant city on a quest to discover prodigious quantities of precious glowing orbs. Mmm… orbs. Just thinking about them makes me hungry for Crackdown 2.
And Crackdown 2 is just what I’ll be playing Monday, June 21st when the demo hits Xbox Live. But why wait until Monday to play the demo when you can watch Crackdown 2 demo footage right now? Check it out after the jump:
In all seriousness, Crackdown to remains the most fun open-world game I’ve ever played. It may seem counter intuitive, but by largely doing away with any real story, the game actually drew me more into the experience. Not just being allowed, but actually being rewarded for basically messing around in the game world kept my attention far longer than any of the more “serious” open wold titles.
That said, in the years since Crackdown first appeared, several other games have taken Crackdown’s core gameplay and run with it (specifically the terrific inFamous, which has its own sequel on the way). Crackdown 2 has something to prove.
The addition of Freaks, the game’s zombie-like (but not zombie) night-time plague, plus the overreaching goal of assembling the anti-Freak super weapon Project Sunburst should go some way toward updating the Crackdown 2 experience. Which is all good, as long as it doesn’t get in the way of my orb collecting.
Ranters, I know a ton of you have got to be hotly anticipating Crackdown 2. How do you think the game is shaping up? Be sure to come back to Game Rant and let us know what you think of the demo.
The Crackdown 2 demo reports for duty Monday, June 21st, on Xbox LIVE.
Crackdown 2 releases exclusively for the Xbox 360 July 6th in North America, July 9th in Europe.
