You can be sure of 3 things when a World of Warcraft expansion is released, the upcoming Cataclysm included. 1) There will be an absurd number of people playing the new races/classes. 2) People will be racing to the new level cap. 3) People will need crafted items for their characters. The latter, crafted items, is an ideal situation to take advantage of. Gamers need equipment as they level, and that means anyone willing to put in the time can reap the profits.
One of the surest ways to make some good money during an expansion release is to have your characters acquire capped crafting skills. Then you put all your efforts into leveling crafting, not character level, so that you can make all the newest, latest and greatest items, which allows you to put them up on the auction house at an inflated price -- making you rich. Since everyone else is busy leveling they will need what you have to sell.
The money you can make doing this everyday is crazy, and if you add in the generally inflated prices just after an expansion comes out, you might find yourself getting gold capped! The key to today's guide is that you must be at 450 (max) skill with your profession by the time of Cataclysm launch.
Now, I am not going to lie: This is going to take time and money to get done if you have not done it already. Not to mention there is not much time left in which to do it. The good news is that materials are cheaper than ever right now, because everyone is getting rid of them while they are worth something (more on this next week). No matter how cheap the mats may be though, this is going to be a time consuming project. If it was easy then everyone would do it (just like Loremaster title), but if you have the upfront gold to buy the mats in bulk then it will make your life a lot easier.
I am not going to re-hash the zillion of crafting guides you can find on the internet, but what I am going to do is share some of the great nuggets of information I have learned to level crafting quickly, and I promise this isn’t going to be cheap!
Get to Dalaran. The trainers there can train in most things, emphasis on the word most not all, so as you level (every 5 levels or so) you can immediately train. Also, you will be within feet of the forge or whatever you else may need to actually craft including vendor items such as dyes. As a bonus, if you are an engineer there is an auction house too. It would be a smart decision to have another character at the auction house buying your mats.
From there it is simple: find the orange/yellow recipes, buy the mats that are required for 5-20 of them a and craft. As you level and train the next recipe, begin to craft them instead. Rinse and repeat. You may need to buy a recipe or two off the auction house in order to fill the odd gap in NPC recipes, but besides that if you have the time and the money you can get to 450 pretty effectively.
Come Cataclysm get to your main city of choice, train and start the process again with the new skills. This will be way more expensive, but have a much large profit margin (and will make you a hero in your guild). You may think this sounds crazy, but people will need the new gems and enchants and are willing to pay almost anything to get them while they level. The levels will be there, craft first and enjoy your money while you level later. You can even expedite your Cataclysm install by preloading now to ensure you are the first one selling those amazing new gems.
What do you think Ranters? With 12 million players and growing, most will not even think about their professions till 85, and you can be that 1% dominating the market and making the great money. Will you try it? Have you done it in the past? Tell us your success (or failure) stories!
