Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield launched in late 2019 and were both received very well. The Pokemon brand comfortably expanded to the Nintendo Switch console with its impressive 3D graphics. However, there remains a number of Pokemon fans who'd love a more classically-inspired iteration of the franchise. While Game Freak has its eyes forward, indie games like Coromon are more than willing to fill that gap instead.

Coromon that seeks to emulate what the Pokemon franchise used to be. Coromon may even be one of the closest recreations of past Pokemon games that's ever been made. Coromon still has all of its own unique are and monsters, though; it's just immediately recognizable as a retro Pokemon game, for better or worse.

A new Coromon trailer should clarify exactly how close to classic Pokemon games it is. The Coromon trailer shows the protagonist exploring a unique region with various biomes including grassy woodlands, dry desert areas, rainy towns, and snowy caves. There are also some Coromon battle sequences shown with named creatures like Bazzer, Dugterra, Lunarpup, and a small adorable bipedal shark called Nibblegar.

Pokemon players will find much that's immediately recognizable, but just different enough to stand apart. Instead of Pokemon balls, there are Coromon Spinners that look like yoyos that become fidget spinners. The battle music is incredibly familiar, including the battle victory music. It might be seen as going too far, if Game Freak hadn't moved on to a different visual aesthetic and if fans didn't really want more of the 2D pixelized style of Pokemon game.

Coromon is tentatively planned for release in 2020 according to the game's Steam profile, though the lack of a date in the trailer may indicate that its launch is still in the air. According to the game's official website, it's being planned for PC as well as Android mobile devices. For those interested in more information, Coromon just released a demo of the game, in addition to the new trailer. It can be downloaded from Coromon's official website.

Coromon is just one example of several titles trying to capitalize on the modern popularity of Pokemon. Other titles include Temtem, a Pokemon-like MMO, and Monster Crown, which is more akin to the original Pokemon games. It's a good time to be a Pokemon fan.

Coromon releases in 2020 on PC and Android devices.
