Cooking Simulator may not be talked about much in mainstream gaming, but its newest DLC may change that. Cooking Simulator originally came out in June 2019 for the PC but has since expanded its horizons to a few different platforms. The game also garnered attention in the form of “Let’s Plays” on YouTube, with viewers watching content creators try (and sometimes fail) to master the sensitive controls of Cooking Simulator. The game already has three DLCs—Pizza, Cakes and Cookies, and Cooking with Food Network—but the developer is about to add one more to the mix.

The release date for the upcoming Cooking Simulator DLC, Shelter, is unclear, but what’s been teased has already proven to be an interesting concept and incredibly similar to the much-loved Fallout franchise. Cooking Simulator: Shelter takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland and will give players a unique experience not found in the Cooking Simulator base game. From what’s been revealed of Cooking Simulator: Shelter’s premise, it seems to be going in a similar direction to that of Fallout.

What is Cooking Simulator: Shelter?

As the name suggests, Cooking Simulator: Shelter will have players cooking in an underground shelter in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Unlike the Cooking Simulator base game, players will also have to gather resources to cook with, some of which will be scarce to find. The description says that players can hunt for “mutant meat” and even grow glowing foods like vegetables and mushrooms. While it’s unclear what capacity players will be actively interacting with or hunting for resources, they’ll still have a small space to grow a garden in their shelter.

While players may be used to wreaking havoc in Sandbox mode or cooking in their own restaurant in Campaign mode, Cooking Simulator: Shelter is shaping up to be quite a different Cooking Simulator experience. However, Shelter will still have a Sandbox mode. Players get a bit of a backstory in Cooking Simulator: Shelter as well, with the Campaign mode sending them on a quest to reunite with their family. The underground shelter is located in a place called Sector 12 and players must repair an old radio satellite dish, but they’ll need help from the locals to get it running. Additionally, players will also be the “only skilled cook” in the Sector, so they’ll have to trade and partner up with different settlements and caravans in the surrounding area.

Similarities Between Fallout and Cooking Simulator: Shelter

Given the details revealed about Cooking Simulator: Shelter, the Fallout comparison was only natural to make. While Fallout definitely isn’t the only post-apocalyptic game, elements from Cooking Simulator: Shelter point to a clearly Fallout-influenced DLC. Specifically, it seems to be incorporating elements from Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4. The detail about players trying to reconnect with their long-lost family is incredibly reminiscent of the Sole Survivor’s journey in Fallout 4 to find their missing child.

Fallout: New Vegas is a long-heralded title in the franchise, with many players eagerly awaiting any and all news about the potential for a Fallout: New Vegas 2. Cooking Simulator: Shelter seems to be inspired by the Fallout franchise’s choice system where players must align themselves with different factions to achieve—or prevent—certain things. It’s unclear if players can make enemies in Cooking Simulator: Shelter in the same way that Fallout allows, but it would be an interesting detail if incorporated. Additionally, players being able to hunt “mutant meat” and grow strange wasteland foods for uniquely apocalyptic recipes is inherently reminiscent of Fallout: New Vegas and its crafting system for different food and drink.

The release date for Cooking Simulator: Shelter remains to be revealed, but players can get acquainted with the base game before the release of Shelter. Oppositely, players could start a playthrough of Fallout: New Vegas or Fallout 4 to get acquainted with the post-apocalyptic wasteland feeling that Cooking Simulator: Shelter will deliver upon release.

Cooking Simulator is available for Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
