Riot Games made a big appearance at The Game Awards last night, joining the myriad of developers and producers that announced new titles coming after 2019. During the show, the studio revealed a new title set in the League of Legends universe called Convergence: A League of Legends Story.

Under its new initiative called Riot Forge, Riot Games has been collaborating with third-party developers on a number of titles. Along with Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, also announced last night, Convergence: A League of Legends Story is part of this initiative.

Convergence: A League of Legends Story is a single-player action-platformer in which players take on the role of Ekko, an inventive young man with a time-manipulating device. Not much is known beyond the trailer League of Legends fans from around the world were treated to during the awards show, but we do know it is being developed by Double Stallion Games with Riot Games' oversight. Double Stallion Games is a relatively lesser-known studio with only a few titles under its belt, including Speed Brawl, and Big Action Mega Fight!

Messing with time travel, as any science fiction fan knows, can make for a messy if entertaining story. Convergence is planned to be a rich, story-driven narrative, which is something of a first with the League of Legends universe. Before now, most of the world's story was contained within text boxes and occasional trailers within the juggernaut main title, which is planning a console and mobile release. It would seem the new title aims to change that., adding a significant narrative to the mix.

Considering League of Legends has been around for 10 years and continues to hold relevance, including being played by US Congresspeople. A story-based spin-off is a welcome addition to keep the spirit alive. It seems wise of the studio to work with other, smaller developers that are more accustomed to creating single-player narrative experiences instead of trekking alone into a new genre. Riot's close oversight can also keep the title solidly within the spirit of League of Legends.

League of Legends may not be everybody's kind of game, but a single-player story-based game set in the same universe could be a boon for those who don't play MOBAs but are interested in the world and characters. Ekko may very well be their foray into that world.

Convergence: A League of Legends Story is coming to PC and consoles.
