Control was one of the surprise hits of 2019, with developer Remedy releasing the strange, supernatural game to critical acclaim. While that game was single-player, focusing on protagonist Jesse as she explores the Federal Bureau of Control, Remedy has announced a new entry in the series that will see multiple players tackle its challenges together, shaking up the formula found in the first game.

Over on Remedy's website, Game Director Mikael Kasurinen elaborated on the team's decision to pursue a multiplayer Control game, which has been codenamed Condor in the meantime. Kasurinen stated that Control is a world rather than just the story of an individual, and there are plenty of opportunities to tell interesting stories in the context of that world. Condor is going to be an "expression of that," according to the blog post.

Kasurinen cites the original Doomspecifically E1M1, as an example of how a game can change when played with friends, saying that it was a "blast" to do so. While Kasurinen has spent his career developing single-player games, he says that the developers at Remedy are all big fans of multiplayer titles too, and multiplayer is capable of elevating an experience. He goes on to acknowledge that some will be skeptical of a shift to multiplayer, but the team believes it can deliver a good experience without compromising "the unique DNA" that makes up Remedy.

Control multiplayer concept art with four men on a bench and a body bag beneath their feet

There are few other details about the game shared in Remedy's blog post, though there is a single piece of concept art that may give fans a better idea of what to expect. Four people sit on a bench with a body bag at their feet, with each of the four people in different levels of armor. This paints a picture of some sort of co-op shooter, possibly class-based, in some sort of PvE environment. Of course, there's a good chance that the concept art is hiding other, smaller details too, which may reveal more information later down the line.

Unfortunately, Control fans shouldn't expect any news about the project for a while, according to Kasurinen. The project is apparently still early on in development, with the team just closing a co-publishing deal with 505 Games. However, Kasurinen did state that there are other Remedy projects in the works too – including another Control project dubbed Project Vanguard – so there should be new experiences for fans of the developer to enjoy before long.

A multiplayer Control game is in development.
