It's no secret by now that Remedy Entertainment's Control has many connections to Alan Wake. Easter eggs found in Control highly suggest that the two games are set in the same universe, and it looks like Remedy will be exploring that connection even further in the future with the AWE story expansion.

Remedy recently revealed the Control DLC roadmap, detailing exactly what fans can expect from the game in 2019 and beyond. 2019 will see the addition of a Photo Mode and a new game mode called Expeditions, but 2020 is when Control fans can look forward to new story expansions. The first story expansion is called The Foundation and will see players venture to the bottom of the Old House, but the more interesting expansion for Alan Wake fans is AWE, which is scheduled to launch in mid 2020.

We know next to nothing about the Control AWE expansion and what it will entail, but fans have noted that its art seems to indicate that it will be about Alan Wake. The AWE letters in the DLC roadmap are stylized to show what appears to be a forest, with someone holding a flashlight standing in the center. This imagery is highly reminiscent of Alan Wake, so it's not a stretch to say that the Control AWE DLC is in fact an Alan Wake-themed expansion.

Some fans have taken the speculation a step further and point out that "AWE" could be an acronym for Alan Wake Expansion. This could be true, but AWE also has a meaning in Control itself. Those who have played through Control will know that AWE stands for Altered World Event, and as we learned from the various Alan Wake easter eggs in the game, the events in Bright Falls was an Altered World Event that was investigated by the FBC.

Perhaps the likely Control/Alan Wake DLC will give fans some closure. However, some may prefer to see a full-fledged Alan Wake 2 instead. Such a game still hasn't been announced, but it's much more likely to materialize now that Remedy has regained the publishing rights to Alan Wake.

Control is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
