Fans of the real-time strategy series Command & Conquer have had it rough for the last several years. A reboot of the series was in development circa 2013 courtesy of developer Victory Games but publisher EA ultimately canceled the project, as well as closed down the studio. Following that, the series seemed dead in the water. But recently, it seems EA might be considering something of a comeback in the form of remasters.

Via a post on the Command & Conquer subreddit, EA producer Jim Vessella, who had previously worked on the likes of Command & Conquer 3 and Red Alert 3, stated that EA is "exploring some exciting ideas" regarding remastering some of the classic PC releases in order to coincide with the series' 25th anniversary.

This is following on from the news that a new Command & Conquer game would be coming to mobile devices, titled Command & Conquer Rivals, which was announced earlier this year at E3. Despite the demand for a new entry, most fans weren't especially happy to see the series come back as a mobile game that seemed to emulate the likes of Clash of Clans. The official announcement trailer, at the time of writing, currently has only 2.8K likes compared to the 60k dislikes on YouTube.

"As most of you may know, we recently announced Command & Conquer: Rivals, a mobile game set in the Command & Conquer universe. Following the reveal of Rivals, we heard you loud and clear: the Command & Conquer community also wants to see the franchise return to PC" wrote Vessella, somewhat addressing the negative reception.

"With that in mind we’ve been exploring some exciting ideas regarding remastering the classic PC games, and already have the ball rolling on our first effort to celebrate the upcoming 25th Year Anniversary."

Considering that the anniversary isn't until 2020, it'll probably be a while until we get any concrete details as to which games will be remastered, but Vessella seems eager to make fans optimistic about the future, closing the post with "As a long time C&C fan and developer, I am just as passionate about the C&C franchise as you are, and look forward to hearing your thoughts as they help us shape the future of C&C at EA!"

While news of remasters could get some fans excited, especially since it's been six years since the last entry in the series, it might be easier said than done for others, since EA has garnered an infamous reputation amongst gamers for its overuse of lootboxes (which has since led to lootboxes being banned in certain countries) and constant closure of studios under its control.

Command & Conquer Rivals is set to release on iOS and Android, though it has yet to be given a release date.
