It can be a lot of fun to look back at the older days of gaming. Sure, graphical technology has evolved at an incredible rate in such a short time; we can play games with people on the other side of the planet; and video games are now arguably a legitimate art form. But for those of us who grew up with gaming from a fairly young age, it's nice to look back at a simpler time, when the graphics were bright and simple, and the music consisted of beeps and boops. Granted, the term "simpler" rarely applied to these games' level of difficulty, as many will tell you that older games were legendarily hard relative to modern day's more "accessible" titles. One example of this classic form of gaming is the Sega Genesis title Comix Zone, which is getting a re-release on PlayStation Plus very soon.

For those of you who remember, Comix Zone was a side-scrolling, beat-em-up exclusive on the Sega Genesis. It featured the main character jumping into a comic world he created in order to stop some evil force from switching places with him and taking over the real world. In addition to the unique premise, the game was known for its incredible difficulty, which made up for its fairly short length. It also had a unique grunge-style soundtrack, which wasn't surprising, considering the game was made in the early-to-mid-90s.

The Comix Zone re-release will be free for PlayStation Plus subscribers as part of the August 9th update along with an add-on bundle for Crash Commando and a trial of Far Cry 2. The A Breath of Fire IV avatar bundle will arrive at the same time for 99 cents. Granted, if this is anything like other old-school games that have appeared on the service, you could probably wait a month or so and buy the game normally, rather than subscribe to PlayStation Plus. And let's not forget, if your subscription runs out, all your games that you got from the service are inaccessible...

If you do want to get this game, it will be up for download next week and will replace the current free title, Golden Axe, in the process, so if you want that game, you'd best hurry up and get it. The best part of Comix Zone being re-released is that we listed it back in February as one of of the 10 classic console games deserving of a sequel!
