2K Games recently had a leak that revealed some of its upcoming titles, some of which it may be showing at this year's E3 conference. One of the leaked properties was a still in-development title being published by 2K Games, that, according to the leaker, has been described as Cthulhu meets the Saints Row series.

Reportedly referred to as Codename Volt internally by the developers, there is little else known about the title. Some have piece together that the Codename Volt is likely being developed by Hangar 13, the developers of Mafia 3 and Mafia: Definitive Edition, as another leak indicated it was working on a supernatural game. With that in mind, it is not difficult to imagine just what a Saints Row game with Lovecraftian elements may look like.

The Parts of Saints Row Likely Kept for Codename Volt

Saints Row The Third characters

Saints Row is an open-world action franchise that began with a more serious tone before gradually becoming more comedic and over the top. Saints Row 4 even blew up Earth and allowed players to inflate enemies until they exploded with an inflation ray weapon. The aspects that have been consistent across the series, and are most likely to appear in Codename Volt, are the mini games and the huge amount of customizability.

Saints Row has always had a lot of side activities and mini games for players to tackle, from vandalizing properties with raw sewage to committing insurance fraud. If Codename Volt is being compared to Saints Row, it is likely that it will have plenty of imaginative side activities for players to enjoy, but Saints Row is also very well known for its customizability. It is likely that Codename Volt will also let players customize their character and other aspects of the game, even if it does take a more serious tone than the later Saints Row titles.

What the Cthulhu Universe Could Bring to Codename Volt

The Cthulhu mythos has a lot of depth and variety to it, and it is no stranger to the games industry. Not only has the Ancient One inspired their own games, but Cthulhu even became a playable character in the MOBA SMITE last year. By looking at both the Cthulhu mythos itself as well as how it has been integrated into games in the past, there are some aspects that are sure to make it into Codename Volt.

The largest part of Chulhu's appearances in games that would almost undoubtedly show up in Codename Volt is players having to manage their character's sanity. Dealing with the horrors of the ancient ones is not for the faint of heart, and Codename Volt will likely feature that sees players being able to do certain things depending on their sanity level. Maybe a character going insane will even change how they see the open world in a way that works similarly to this year's The Medium that rendered two versions of the world at once. Codename Volt will also likely see players taking the role of investigators as that is a staple of the Cthulhu mythos and games based on it.

Codename Volt is reportedly early on in its development, so fans will likely have to wait quite a while longer to get any official announcements or news about the game. The premise does seem like an interesting one, however, and one that could stand out in the open-world genre. 2K Games does reportedly have a lot of other great games to show off this year, however, like the leaked Tiny Tina Borderlands spin-off.

Codename Volt is rumored to be in development.
