A new trailer for the upcoming Souls-like Code Vein shows off a difficult battle against a wicked butterfly woman with a seemingly sentient venomous tail. The boss, aptly named Butterfly of Delirium, looks like it will give Code Vein players a pounding.

Code Vein, which gets a demo next week, combines Dark Souls with anime vampires in a brightly gothic setting. The game features a group of vampires called Revenants who will hack and slash their way through a gauntlet of twisting gothic settings and harrowing boss battles while fighting creatures called the Lost.

Now, players have a new glimpse of one of the horrors they will encounter when Code Vein drops in September. The Butterfly of Delirium is an airborne woman wearing a crown of thorns and swooping around the battlefield on flower petal wings, with her flight seeming dictated by a menacing, snake-like tail.

The trailer leans into the Dark Souls comparison by showing its protagonist mostly failing against the boss. The Butterfly of Delirium's snake-tail spits a giant purple cloud of some kind of noxious venom that staggers the protagonist while inflicting damage, and considering Dark Souls has a reputation for difficulty that allures players, it makes sense that Code Vein would put its difficulty front and center.

At least Code Vein players will have some help. One of the major selling points of Code Vein that sets it apart from Dark Souls, aside from the leather-clad anime vampires, is that the game will feature full co-op with either another player or an AI. The Souls games allow players to call on help in specific encounters with bosses, but the help comes from a random player or NPC and only lasts until that character perishes or the fight ends.

Bandai Namco revealed Code Vein at E3 2017, and it has since had a long journey to release. The game already went through a couple of delays that pushed it back a whole year. Soon, folks will find out if the added polish made the game worth checking out and if it can capture the hearts of From Software fans enough to tide them over until the release of Elden Ring.

Code Vein releases September 27, 2019, on PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.
