There's no doubt that 2015 was a good year for video games, with a number of incredible AAA releases like The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 being buoyed by some surprisingly well-crafted indie games like Game of the Year contender Rocket League. YouTube's list of their highest trending gaming videos reflects the big year the video game industry had, featuring the aforementioned titles alongside some staples like the Pokemon and Grand Theft Auto franchises. However, the crown for the top trending gaming video of 2015 belongs to a game few would've considered even cracking the top 10 list.

Helsinki-based developer Supercell and their mobile effort Clash of Clans has the honor of being the top trending gaming video of 2015, and the viewership numbers from their Superbowl commercial were over four times the next closest video, a live-action homage to Grand Theft Auto 5. Clash of Clans is another entry into the polarizing catalogue of mobile gaming, a freemium strategy video game that is best known for its cartoon graphics and entertaining advertisements.

Despite the relatively simple nature of Clash of Clans, Supercell has a clear knack for marketing that shines through in their series of video game commercials regarding their IP. The Superbowl ad in particular features a memorable Liam Neeson cameo, as the actor basically reprises his role from the Taken series of films in an over-the-top monologue about revenge after another Clash of Clans player attacks his base.

While Clash of Clans was the big winner, its interesting to examine the rest of the list to see what kind of videos were the trendiest in a year filled with enthralling titles. For instance, EA and DICE's Star Wars Battlefront reveal trailer was the third-highest trending video this year, despite that momentum slowing down significantly upon the game's release. Clash of Clans wasn't the only mobile game to make an impact online either, as Pokemon GO also made the top 10 despite very little information being available on the title currently.

What YouTube's list really shows is the diversity that video game developers are currently bringing to the table. When a list populated by which gaming videos got the most views includes Grand Theft Auto 5, Five Nights at Freddy's 3, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake, it appears pretty clear that the video game industry isn't just the MOBA and FPS-dominated market that some seem to believe it is. Although Clash of Clans might not be everyone's first choice, the fact that it's a viable choice for developers to pursue at all is something gamers should be thankful for.
