There are plenty of helpful resources available around the globe for players to obtain in Sid Meier's Civilization 6. One of these resource types are bonus resources. While they are unable to be traded, they can be helpful for raising numbers.
One option players can take in Civilization 6 regarding bonus resources is to harvest the resources with builders. This will completely get rid of the bonus resource from the tile, but will give players 25 times the resource's normal yield at once (at normal game speed).
However, building an improvement on a bonus resource can give yields every turn. This can provide players a lot of resources over time that can help immensely.
There are a total of eleven different bonus resources that players can find and take advantage of in Civilization 6. There are:
- Bananas - +1 Food
- Cattle - +1 Food
- Copper - +2 Gold
- Crabs - +2 Gold
- Deer - +1 Production
- Fish - +1 Food
- Maize - +2 Gold (+1 Food with Water Mill)
- Rice - +1 Food (+1 Food with Water Mill)
- Sheep - +1 Food
- Stone - +1 Production
- Wheat - +1 Food (+1 Food with Water Mill)
Players should note that there is no benefit to founding a city on a bonus resource as this will just remove the bonus resource with no benefit. Certain bonus resources such as rice and wheat additionally produce more food if there is a working water mill located in the city they are improved upon.
Whether or not players should harvest bonus resources is entirely situational. If players are in a comfortable space where they have time to grow, it's recommended that players have improvements on top of their bonus resources so that they can have as many resources as possible. After many turns, these bonuses add up into helpful parts of civilization building.
The best times to harvest bonus resources are when those resources are needed in large quantities quickly or when room is needed for an important district or wonder. To play it safe, players should always have a builder harvest the bonus resource before building anything on top of the tile. Players should also note that certain technologies are required to harvest certain bonus resources, such as Pottery being required in order to harvest wheat.
