Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has a pair of very interesting villains that Peter Quill and company will be encountering, but according to actor Chukwudi Iwuji, his High Evolutionary might give the MCU's bad guys a boost, as he's described his character as an outright narcissistic sociopath.

Iwuji boarded Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after working with James Gunn on HBO Max's Peacemaker, playing undercover Butterfly Clemson Murn in the series to great effect. The director loved his work so much that he cast him from the series’ set straight away. While the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer was screened at San Diego Comi-Con last weekend, and Gunn himself said the preview won’t be out until the final VFX details are ironed out, it still ended up leaking online, meaning some fans already got to see some snippets of the movie, though no real glance at its one true villain.

In an interview with Collider, Iwuji explained how he tackled the role of this vastly powerful genius and cosmic villain, defining the High Evolutionary as “narcissistic, sociopathic, but very charming.” So, quite the set of adjectives to start from, and Iwuji notes that his High Evolutionary looks very different from the comics. For example, his costume was still on point to do the character justice, and the actor believes it was crucial to help him nail the right performance for the man formerly known as Herbert Wyndham.

Besides the High Evolutionary, the Guardians will also be facing off against Adam Warlock, played by Will Poulter. Unlike his boss, Adam Warlock does show up in the leaked version of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer. In Marvel Comics, the High Evolutionary recruits Adam Warlock to do his bidding, although the latter does defect when he finds out he's working for a narcissistic sociopath. It remains to be seen how much of the source material will be adapted for Vol. 3.

Practically the entire Guardians' cast attended Comic-Con, where Marvel fans got their first true look at Iwuji's costume, though it’s possible he could get some extra effects added on top to compliment his imposing presence. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the closing chapter of Gunn's tenure over the group of heroes, and he’s clarified on numerous occasions that the film will feature more mature themes and the death of some beloved characters.

The Guardians of the Galaxy's last appearance came in Thor: Love and Thunder, coming off as more comic relief in the film rather than something more integral to the film’s plot, a choice that many fans felt underutilized one of Marvel Studios' most popular franchises.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled for release on May 5, 2023.
