Chucky, the star of the Child's Play franchise, has been a horror icon for decades since the first Child's Play film was released in 1988. Now, Syfy will be continuing the legacy with a brand-new series based on the character and past stories of Chucky, and a new trailer has been released by the channel that shows viewers exactly what fans of the Child's Play franchise will be in for.

The most recent continuation of Child's Play was a feature film reboot of the franchise released in June of 2019. The film featured Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza and repurposed Chucky as a robotic prototype of a doll soon to be prepared for mass production. The reboot received mixed to positive reviews and was a modest box office success for distributor Orion Pictures, proving that Chucky content can attract horror movie audiences.

The new Chucky series and its trailer promise a story about an idyllic suburban town that is turned upside down when a teenager buys a "Good Guy" doll that mysteriously appears at a yard sale. The teenager develops a strange connection with the doll, though the doll begins to disturb the town. The town is then thrown into chaos and turmoil after the doll commits a series of murders. The series stars The 5th Wave child star Zackary Arthur as well as a slew of recognizable character actors including Longmire's Teo Briones and Final Destination's Devon Sawa, with longtime Chucky series actors Jennifer Tilly and Alex Vincent making returns alongside original Chucky voice actor Brad Dourif. The show is written and created by Don Mancini, who has either written or directed seven of the previous Chucky films as well as various episodes of Hannibal and Channel Zero.

Cable channels have been making strides to adapt to the current television climate after many consumers have decided on cutting the cord in favor of streaming services. SyFy is one such channel; they've been airing episodes of DC shows such as the animated Harley Quinn series in addition to new shows such as Resident Alien, but they have been in need of a major draw to their channel after high-profile shows such as The Magicians and Van Helsing came to an end.

Chucky is commonly ranked among other horror villains such as Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, and Candyman as one of the all-time most recognizable horror film characters. So, with a recognizable name like Chucky, SyFy will certainly draw in horror buffs to the channel while scaring them senseless in the process.

Chucky premieres on SYFY on October 12, 2021.
