SYFY's new TV series of the classic horror icon from the Child's Play horror franchise, Chucky, only debuted on screens in October but has already been renewed for a second season, just as the anticipated finale airs. Confirmation came from creator Don Mancini that Chucky will indeed live to slay another day.

The series is based on the iconic Child's Play slasher movies that originally appeared in the 1980s. It follows the events in a typical American small town that becomes terrorized after a vintage 'Good Guy' doll makes its way to a yard sale and a series of gruesome murders follow, unearthing dark secrets about the supposedly idyllic town. The series creator, Mancini, who was the scribe for all seven films in the franchise and directed 3, was the one who adapted his movies for the Chucky television series. He also served as showrunner and executive producer.

Mancini said in a statement that he and his team are "thrilled to start pulling the strings on a second season of puppet mayhem," before going on to thank the studio UCP along with SYFY and Network USA (both of which are under the NBCUniversal umbrella) for their support. The creator also "passed on" a supposed message from Chucky, stating, "‘This isn’t over, not by a long shot. You better watch your backs in 2022!" Fans who have just enjoyed the finale of the show can be reassured by the news that the second season will reportedly be debuting sometime next year, though a specific release window has not yet been announced.

Chucky

The terrifying Chucky is a character that is constantly reappearing. Though the Child's Play movies were never the biggest horror hits, the 33-year legacy of Chucky, or Charles Lee Ray as he's also known, is proof that he has a talent for sticking around. The doll is an iconic horror villain and the sole reason behind the enduring popularity of the movies and their offshoots. The TV series made the smart decision to bring back the original voice of the killer doll throughout the film franchise, Brad Dourif.

Dourif pulls off the not-so-easy feat of truly bringing the doll to life and also wisely plays into the comedy aspect of the character well. Another franchise veteran, Tiffany Valentine - the other murderous doll who also happens to be Chucky's wife - returned as well, along with the original theme from the movies. The combination of these old-school original elements served to make a successful Chucky series that kept old fans happy.

The speedy renewal for a second season is no surprise, as Chucky has brought millions of viewers to USA Network and SYFY, and even became one of the top two new cable series for viewers aged 18-49 (the other being SYFY's Resident Alien, which has also been renewed for a second season). The format of a television series has served the story well, allowing for a deeper exploration of the characters and an extended reign of terror for Chucky. Whether season 2 will continue the story of season 1 is so far unclear, but more details are sure to be announced soon.

Chucky will be available to stream in full on Peacock from December 1st, 2021.
